WayForward collaborates with Atari to reimagine the classic arcade shooter Yars into a Metroidvania game featuring a hacker named Emi Kimura navigating a futuristic world.

Yars Rising: A Refreshing Spin on a Classic Game

WayForward Technologies, a veteran in the gaming industry known for its work on titles like Contra and Silent Hill, has taken on a surprisingly unique project in collaboration with Atari. They are set to revitalize the beloved early '80s arcade shooter, Yars' Revenge, into a Metroidvania-style game titled Yars Rising. This new game introduces the character of Emi Kimura, a charismatic hacker in the year 2049, innovatively blending classic gameplay with a fresh narrative and modern mechanics.

The inception of Yars Rising stemmed from a brainstorming conversation between Atari and WayForward, where Atari inquired about WayForward’s interest in their classic brands. Out of many options, Yars stood out due to its captivating sound design, psychedelic colors, and its forward-thinking gameplay. The exciting challenge for WayForward was to transform a straightforward shooter into something unexpected—a Metroidvania game. James Montagna, the director from WayForward, emphasized their goal to deliver an experience that players didn't even know they wanted, leading them to create a rich narrative around Emi Kimura’s adventures.

In Yars Rising, players control Emi as she infiltrates a company called Qotech, reminiscent of the original game’s Qotile enemy. Emi’s journey involves hacking into various terminals, a nod to the arcade shooter mechanism from the 1982 Yars' Revenge. These hacking sequences, while reflective of the original gameplay, evolve and grow more complex as players progress, fitting seamlessly into the larger narrative and gameplay objectives.

Aside from hacking, Emi Kimura’s abilities expand as she encounters terminals that alter her DNA, granting her new powers such as the 'Zorlon Shot'. This futuristic twist not only pays homage to the original game’s weaponry but also integrates smoothly into the action-Metroidvania style. There are also light stealth elements where Emi must navigate through secure areas without alerting guards, adding a layer of strategic depth to the game.

Yars Rising is not merely a reboot; it’s a creative homage to the legacy of Atari, filled with Easter eggs and allusions to other Atari franchises and influential figures like Nolan Bushnell, Atari's co-founder. The game promises a rich tapearly of nostalgia mixed with innovative gameplay and narrative.

On enhancing player experience, Yars Rising includes attention to detail even in its version for the Nintendo Switch, particularly utilizing the HD rumble feature for a more immersive experience. Furthermore, the auditory experience of Yar's Rising is noted to be robust, featuring a diverse and ambitious soundtrack collaborated on by an international group of over 20 artists, providing a remarkable audio-visual journey.

Despite its deep ties to the original game, WayForward did not work directly with Howard Scott Warshaw, the creator of Yars' Revenge, although his pioneering work remains a profound inspiration for the team. Instead, WayForward and Atari have chosen to respect and build upon the foundation that Warwhar set, ensuring Yars Rising remains true to its roots while exploring new creative directions.

Adding another layer to the game's narrative and interest, Emi Kimura represents an effort by Atari to introduce iconic characters into their games, helping to build a connection with new audiences while offering something fresh to longtime Atari fans. This aligns with modern gaming trends where character-driven narratives enhance engagement and deepen the game’s impact.

Atari's CEO, Wade Rosen, shared insights on the collaborative process with WayForward, emphasizing the alignment of passion and creative vision that led to Yars Rising. He noted the importance of interweaving classic Yars gameplay to appeal not just to nostalgic fans but also to introduce newcomers to Atari’s rich history through a contemporary lens.

Yars Rising promises to be a love letter to Atari, blending homage, innovation, and anticipation for what classic gaming can become in the modern era. As fans of both WayForward and Atari await the release of Yars Rising on Nintendo Switch later this year, the game stands as a testament to the potential of reimagined classics in today’s video game culture. With its strategic gameplay, intriguing narrative, and respectful nod to its origins, Yars Rising is setting up to be a notable addition to the Metroidvania genre and a rejuvenating chapter in Atari's storied history.
