Unknown 9 Awakening, developed by Reflector, feels like a PS3 game remastered for modern consoles, featuring a character able to manipulate dimensions with complex combat puzzles.

Unknown 9 Awakening: A Retro Gaming Experience

Unknown 9 Awakening, brought to life by the Montreal-based studio Reflector, emerges as a throwback to the PlayStation 3 era, albeit on the latest gaming consoles like PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. This is Reflector's initiative to integrate video games with other media forms such as comics and books. Despite its modern platform, the game maintains a nostalgic feel with its linear setup and smaller, more intimate battle encounters.

Playing as Haroona, a character endowed with the unique ability to shift into a different dimension called the Fold, players find themselves immersed in a world rich with mystery and intrigue. Haroona, portrayed by Anya Chalotra, known for her role in The Witcher, adds a touch of celebrity to the game. Though the animations and cutscenes mirror the stiffness typically seen in games from over a decade ago, they possess a certain charm for those who appreciate that era, such as fans of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

The plot revolves around a mythical faction known as the Ascendants, who wish to misuse the Fold for their own nefarious purposes. With Haroona being a prime target due to her abilities, players must cleverly use the power sought by their enemies against them. This introduces an innovative combat system where you can temporarily take control of adversaries to manipulate battle outcomes—whether causing them to turn on each other or to strategically set up traps.

Each combat scenario is essentially a puzzle. For example, infiltrate a stronghold, control a sniper to take out his ally, and then use environmental hazards against other foes, leading to strategically orchestrated chaos. This gameplay, while somewhat theatrical, is engaging and keeps the challenges fresh and exciting. However, should plans go awry, the game offers a functional, albeit clunky, hand-to-hand combat system as a fallback.

The skill tree, though only slightly explored in the demo, hints at increasingly complicated abilities and tactics as the game progresses, suggesting that future enemies and scenarios will require deeper strategic planning. Additionally, much like titles such as Uncharted or Tomb Raider, Unknown 9 Awakening promises a variety of breathtaking locations, from sunny sea ports to dense tropical jungles, keeping the journey engaging and visually diverse.

Despite its appeal, there's an undertone of concern that Unknown 9 Awakening might not stand out in a crowded market, particularly amidst blockbuster releases. The narrative and game mechanics, while reminiscent and satisfying to some, may not captivate a broader audience accustomed to more dynamic and graphically refined titles.

Furthermore, while the game’s cross-media ambition is commendable, it remains to be seen whether the surrounding lore is compelling enough to sustain interest across different platforms beyond the gaming sphere. Unknown 9 Awakening seems poised on a fine line between nostalgic allure and contemporary appeal, making its potential success uncertain in a highly competitive gaming landscape. The strategic, puzzle-like combat and straightforward level design found in the demo, however, did offer a unique and enjoyable experience that many may find refreshing amidst more expansive, open-world titles.

Scheduled for release on October 17 on both PS5 and PS4, Unknown 9 Awakening beckons to those who yearn for a simpler, narrative-driven adventure reminiscent of a past gaming era. Whether it will indeed capture the hearts of gamers or fade into obscurity remains to be seen. However, for fans of strategic, dimension-warping challenges and a taste of early millennium game design, this title might just be an intriguing diversion.
