The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster for PS5 successfully modernizes the classic, enhancing visuals, AI, and gameplay while staying true to its original charm.

Review of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster on PS5

The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, recently released for PS5, takes us back to the charm of the Capcom releases of the PS3 era—a period known for its hits and misses. With this remaster, Capcom revisits one of its unique classics, Dead Rising, which originally defined the early years of the Xbox 360. Despite having three sequels over 18 years, Dead Rising retains a distinct appeal, characterized by its real-time countdown and survival challenges.

In this PS5 remake, players return to the shoes of Frank West, a photojournalist who lands in the middle of a zombie outbreak in Willamette. The setting is a shopping mall where Frank has only 72 hours before his rescue helicopter arrives. This time limit remains constantly active, pressuring players to manage their time wisely. The core of Dead Rising revolves around resolving the mystery of the outbreak while rescuing survivors within the mall, and the remaster stays true to this formula.

The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is, at its heart, a one-to-one remake with significant technical and quality-of-life enhancements. The visuals have been remarkably upgraded using the RE Engine, capturing the essence of the original but with modern fidelity. Capcom's decision to preserve the original storyline, characters, and the essential three-day timer depicts their commitment to maintaining the game’s genuine nature while upgrading its presentation and mechanics.

The control improvements are a notable enhancement; they now allow for more fluid combat and exploration, addressing some of the original game’s clunky mechanics. Players can aim weapons while moving, and key actions have been remapped to more intuitive controls suitable for contemporary gaming standards. Moreover, quality-of-life improvements such as the ability to skip time and an auto-save feature greatly reduce frustration, ensuring a smoother gameplay experience.

One of the major gripes from the original game was the survivor AI, which often led to tedious and frustrating escort missions as rescued NPCs struggled to follow the player through crowds of zombies. The Deluxe Remaster addresses this issue by overhauling the AI, making survivors smarter and more responsive to threats. This change allows for a more forgiving experience when guiding survivors back to the safe zone. Survivors can now also carry preferred weapons and consume food and drink items for healing, which enhances their effectiveness and boosts their affinity towards Frank, improving their overall utility during missions.

A new voice cast does inject fresh life into the characters, although the replacement of Frank West’s original voice actor, Terence J. Rotolo, with Jas Patrick might not sit well with all fans. While Patrick's performance is solid, it might lack the distinctive personality that Rotolo brought to the character. Nonetheless, the expanded voice activities increase the liveliness and immersion of the game world.

Graphically, the remaster is a testament to how far technology has come since the original release. Character models, environments, and lighting effects have all seen substantial overhauls. These visual enhancements transform how the game is experienced, bringing a level of detail that aligns with current-gen expectations, though it doesn't quite compare to titles built exclusively for the PS5.

Despite these improvements, the game still employs load screens when transitioning between different areas of the mall, which is a slight letdown. While these are now significantly faster thanks to the capabilities of the PS5, they do interrupt the immersion that could have been achieved with a more seamless in-game world.

As a total package, the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster does an excellent job balancing respect for the original game's quirky, time-pressed gameplay with modern enhancements that streamline the experience. It retains the compelling challenge of managing both time and resources in a chaotic environment, now complemented by technical enhancements that make the game more accessible and enjoyable. This isn't just a visual upgrade but a thoughtful modernization of a beloved title, making it the definitive way to experience Dead Rising on contemporary consoles.
