The character of Ganondorf is as synonymous with The Legend of Zelda series as Link and Zelda themselves. Recognizable for his power-hungry ways and striking appearance, Ganondorf has appeared in multiple guises throughout the franchise’s storied history. Recently, fans were given the opportunity to vote on their favorite version of the Gerudo villain, and the results showcase the wide array of designs and the varying impacts they’ve had on players over the years.
In the bottom spot, with 6% of the vote, is the rendition of Ganondorf from Hyrule Warriors. Despite the character’s playable status in this non-canon spin-off, it appears that his portrayal did not leave as lasting an impression as others. This version follows the typical Zelda narrative, wherein Ganondorf is sealed away, regains power, pursues the Triforce, and is eventually defeated by Link.
Just above, with 7% of the fan vote, is the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version of Ganondorf. This iteration combines design elements seen in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. While the design was appreciated, Ganondorf’s slow movements and limited hitboxes in the fighting game made him a less-than-popular choice among players.
Fourth place, with 18% of the vote, surprisingly goes to Wind Waker Ganondorf. Despite some fans' reservations about the cel-shaded design that permeates the game, this version of Ganondorf offers a deeper motive for his actions, driven by his upbringing in the harsh environment of the Gerudo Desert and his envy of Hyrule's prosperity.
Ocarina of Time’s Ganondorf secures the third spot with 19% of the vote. This version marked Ganondorf’s first appearance in the series, making a momentous impact with his imposing posture and nefarious actions. Noteworthy scenes include his capture of Princess Zelda and a chilling moment where he appears to look directly at Link and Zelda through a window, showcasing his menacing presence.
Twilight Princess’s take on Ganondorf is runner-up, edging out Ocarina of Time by just 10 individual votes. His dark, realistic design matched the game's mature aesthetic, and his significant size made for a memorable and challenging final battle for players.
The top spot, with a robust 31% of the votes, shockingly goes to the new Ganondorf in the yet-to-be-released Tears of the Kingdom. Despite fans having seen very little of him, the design has drawn significant excitement, not least due to the impressive hair and chiseled physique shown in the latest trailer. Renowned voice actor Matt Mercer will give voice to the character, promising an even more layered villain.
While it may be premature to rank the most recent Ganondorf so highly, the anticipation for Tears of the Kingdom has clearly had a huge influence on fans' votes. With the game's release still ahead, it's possible this ranking could shift as more is revealed about Ganondorf's role in the latest Zelda installment.
Each iteration of Ganondorf has left its mark on The Legend of Zelda series, whether through striking design, intricate backstory, or sheer charisma. From a standard villain to a misunderstood figure shaped by his harsh environment, the diversity in Ganondorf's character throughout the series illustrates the depth of creativity and narrative development that has captivated fans for decades. As the franchise continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how this iconic character is reimagined for future adventures, and how fans will respond to each new portrayal.
