MultiVersus merges Warner Bros franchises into a compelling free-to-play fighter game on PS5, featuring an array of unique characters and engaging gameplay mechanics.

MultiVersus PS5 Review: A Fun Warner Bros Brawler

MultiVersus, developed by Player First Games and published by WB Games, is taking an ambitious leap in the gaming arena. It’s not merely a fighting game; it’s a crossroads where various Warner Bros franchises meet, delivering an immersive multiplayer experience. Initially introduced through an open beta, the game recently underwent significant improvements, preparing it for an official launch in 2024. This version of MultiVersus stands out as a more polished and complete game than its predecessors, retaining the fun elements that it initially promised.

The game essentially operates as a free-to-play platform fighter, inviting players to indulge in animated battles across a multi-franchise universe. The playable character roster is extensive and diverse, ranging from the charming characters of Looney Tunes to the mythical figures of Game of Thrones, and even including The Iron Giant. This variety not only adds a unique flavor to each match but also allows players to engage with familiar faces in unprecedented battle scenarios.

Each character in MultiVersus is not only uniquely designed from a visual standpoint but also features distinctive game mechanics that align with their personas. For instance, Finn from Adventure Time can collect coins from his opponents to purchase stat boosts, enhancing his abilities temporarily. Another example is Gizmo, who can latch onto allies and provide mutual benefits, showcasing an impressive level of character-specific innovation. Bugs Bunny possesses the ability to burrow underground, offering strategic invulnerability during crucial moments.

One of the highlights of MultiVersus is its focus on cooperative gameplay, primarily through its 2v2 mode. This mode emphasizes teamwork, as each character comes equipped with abilities that can aid their teammates, enriching the collaborative aspect of the game. Although pairing with friends is recommended for a cohesive team strategy, the game also supports matchups with online players, which can vary in organization and outcome.

The combat mechanics of MultiVersus are robust, echoing the responsive, intuitive controls found in the renowned Super Smash Bros series, yet providing enough depth to satisfy more competitive players. The inclusion of rollback netcode has greatly enhanced the online play experience, minimizing lag and maintaining game fluidity. Moreover, the game introduces "Rifts" mode—a novel solo play option featuring themed campaigns, mini-games, and special gameplay modifiers. This mode not only diversifies the gameplay but also includes daily rewards and unlockable content, adding significant replay value.

Monetization in MultiVersus, especially important in a free-to-play setup, has seen improvements. Progression through various in-game features like the Battle Pass might feel slow at times but rewards players sufficiently over time. The Battle Pass system is designed to allow players to earn enough of the in-game premium currency, Gleamium, to purchase the next season's Pass if they complete the current offerings. This system aims for a fair balance, offering players meaningful content such as new character skins and animations while they progress.

While the core gameplay mechanics and character diversity stand out, MultiVersus does experience some setbacks in terms of presentation. The user interface, particularly the menus, can be somewhat confusing, and other minor visual and auditory issues detract from the overall polish of the game. However, these issues are relatively small compared to the game's engaging mechanics and expansive character roster.

Looking ahead, if MultiVersus continues to expand its map offerings, introduce new characters and seasonal updates regularly, it has the potential to sustain and grow its player base. Exciting additions like Banana Guard, The Joker, and Jason Voorhees, with Agent Smith on the horizon, suggest that players have much to look forward to. Positioned as a vibrant alternative to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros, MultiVersus is poised to carve out its unique niche in the platform fighting game genre, promising an evolving and enjoyable gameplay experience for a wide audience.
