In third place, we have a shift from party and role-playing games to more intense action with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on the PlayStation 5, selling 8,620 units. This installment of the long-standing franchise maintains its appeal among fans of first-person shooters, showcasing robust graphics and multiplayer capabilities typical of the series.
Notably, the chart also highlights the resilience of older Nintendo Switch titles, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 5,782 units, bringing its astonishing lifetime sales to over six million copies. Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn’t far behind in the rankings, with total sales reaching nearly eight million units after selling an additional 4,253 copies last week. These games have proven to be evergreen, persistently drawing in players with their engaging and relaxing gameplay.
A new contender, Farmagia, an anime action/farming RPG for the Switch, has managed to just crack into the top ten, capturing gamers' interests with its unique combination of farming simulation and action-RPG mechanics, selling 4,296 copies in its debut week.
The hardware sales charts exhibit a static yet telling story about console preferences among Japanese consumers. The Nintendo Switch OLED model continues to dominate, selling 39,849 units, significantly outpacing other consoles. The Switch Lite and PlayStation 5 follow, with the latter moving 11,566 units this week. Despite new entries in the market such as the Xbox Series X - Digital Edition, Nintendo's offerings remain the preferred choice, indicating a strong brand loyalty and satisfaction with the Switch platform's diverse gaming library.
The gaming market in Japan offers an interesting mix of preferences with a strong inclination towards both modern and classic titles, catering to a wide-ranging audience that values both innovation and nostalgia in their gaming experiences. This eclectic taste ensures that both new releases and enduring favorites continue to thrive in a highly competitive industry.
