Top Obsidian Entertainment design director, Josh Sawyer, reveals he'd revive the Pillars of Eternity series, only if the budget paralleled that of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Obsidian's Josh Sawyer Expresses Desire to Revisit Certain Franchise

Josh Sawyer, a senior figure in the gaming industry, recently hinted at one particular Obsidian Entertainment project that he'd be interested in reviving. However, he put forward a caveat - a high budget equals that of Baldur’s Gate 3.

As the design director of Xbox's Obsidian Entertainment, Sawyer is accustomed to juggling multiple projects concurrently. Despite the company being busy with the upcoming game, Avowed, Sawyer's dreams of potential future ventures are no less apparent. Intriguingly, he expressed his desire for revisiting one specific project, given an adequate budget. His revelation came to light during an interview with TouchArcade, where he was posed a question involving potential future projects: 'Pentiment 2', 'Pillars of Eternity 3', or 'Fallout New Vegas 2'.

In response to the intriguing question, Sawyer said, "I don’t think I would make Pentiment 2. I feel quite content with that game. Although I don’t rule out the possibility of going back to it, I have only recently wrapped it up, so I’d probably wait a bit. Now, if we were talking about an unlimited budget, I would opt for Pillars 3 without a doubt. I am aware of what the financial provisions for [Pillars of Eternity 2] Deadfire were, and they were not that generous. I also know from different sources about the budget allocated for Baldur’s Gate 3. I won't disclose any numbers, but if I were granted a budget like that, I would certainly dive into creating Pillars 3."

It seems that Obsidian is gravitating toward the Pillars of Eternity series, especially considering their soon-to-be Xbox exclusive, Avowed, is set in the similar universe. Indications suggest that a revival of the series in its classic CRPG format might be on the cards if the team were gifted a 'Baldur's Gate 3 size' budget.

However, for the time being, the focal point appears to be Avowed, the first-person take on the Pillars of Eternity world, scheduled for release on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024. Further sweetening the deal, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass on the very day it launches.

While waiting for updated news on these projects, fans and gamers worldwide can't help but eagerly anticipate the remarkable experience Avowed promises to be. After all, the studio behind the original Fallout New Vegas is now owned by Xbox. The only question that remains now is: Between the three options, which one would you prefer to see Obsidian take on?

Undoubtedly, Sawyer's recent revelations have sparked curiosity and anticipation among the gaming community. As Obsidian continues to produce engaging narrative experiences, the prospect of revisiting the beloved Pillars of Eternity with the substantial budget of Baldur's Gate 3 certainly whets the appetite of game enthusiasts around the world.
