A Nintendo Life writer reminisces about Hollow Knight's Deepnest, the game's most polarizing area that encapsulates fear, isolation, and claustrophobia.

Deepnest: Hallownest's Divisively Beloved Domain

Amid the holidays, revisitations of past articles become a tradition, just like the retelling of classic tales; this time it's about a certain section in the gaming world renowned for its ability to divide opinion - Deepnest from Hollow Knight. It is a testament to the skill of Team Cherry, the developers, who crafted an environment that either intrigues with its maze-like tunnels and claustrophobic aura or repels with its unsettling inhabitants and ambiance. It's the kind of place where your mettle is truly tested, offering an experience that stands out starkly against the otherwise melancholic beauty found in areas like City of Tears or the lush but perilous Queen’s Gardens.

When I first encountered Deepnest, the sense of fear and trepidation was apparent; every shadow seemed sinister, every sound a potential threat. This eerie section of Hallownest was a world away from the earlier areas of Greenpath and the Forgotten Wastes. Yet, despite my anxiety and distaste for all things arachnid, I was utterly enamored by the harsh and oppressive setting of Deepnest.

The reason behind my love for Deepnest is that it exemplifies the power of atmosphere in video games - particularly Metroidvanias. As a genre that often dabbles in themes of fear and uncertainty, Hollow Knight showcases this to great effect. From the early combat rhythm taught by the Mantis Lords to the introduction of the plunged in darkness and foreboding of the Deepnest's entryway, players are taught to be wary and brave.

I recall the first time I unwittingly ventured into Deepnest, unprepared without the Lumafly Lantern or nail upgrades. Panic set in, as I was unaccustomed to the darkened landscapes and burrowing monstrosities that called this area home. Re-animating bug corpses chased after my character, and I ultimately met my demise due to an ill-fated encounter with a spiked pit. This initial failure not only terrified me, but also left an indelible mark on my memory.

Upon my return to Deepnest, with increased strength and skills, I found engrossment in the challenges and lore that the Spider Tribe and their domain presented. The trials by staking enemies and navigating treacherous corridors, all while grasping the unique history of the area, was thrilling. My every step was cautious, each monster bringing a mix of fear and exhilaration. The complexity of the Spider Tribe's narrative, their intelligence, their decline, and Herrah's own personal tragedy provided depth to my journey.

Deepnest exudes a feeling of loss and tragedy, seen in its abandoned structures and tragic histories. Experiencing Hornet's pain at the bedside of Herrah was poignant and reinforced the narrative strength of Hollow Knight. The Spider Tribe, once a beacon of intellect and independence, was now just another casualty in the wider tragedy of the kingdom.

Yet, Deepnest's brilliance doesn't resonate with everyone. My partner, upon his playthrough, found Deepnest to be too unsettling and difficult to navigate, which is completely understandable. The area is designed to evoke extreme discomfort and does its job well, perhaps too well for some players' tastes. It's easy to sympathize with anyone who finds Deepnest's combination of anxiety-inducing darkness and intricate layout to be a barrier rather than an engaging challenge.

For some, returning to Deepnest can be a chore, especially when geos and shades are lost among the treacherous terrain. Still, for others like me, the appeal lies in the risk-taking, the exploration, and the need to continuously test and overcome their fears. Each replay brings back the same sense of dread and anticipation, validating the power of the game's ambiance and design.

Deepnest symbolizes a crucial facet of Hollow Knight's allure - the combination of beautiful and daunting, the subtle and terrifying secrets that Hallownest harbors. It exemplifies how effective gaming can be at building atmosphere and tension. Whether Deepnest horrifies or enthralls, it's clear that it’s a piece of the Hollow Knight experience that ignites strong feelings one way or another.

The anticipation around the upcoming Silksong grows, and with it, the possibility of new stories, horrors, and challenges. Pharloom may hold the remnants of the Weavers and the legacies of the Spider Tribe, promising a continuation of the depths explored in Deepnest. Whatever Silksong brings, it seems Deepnest will remain a standout moment in Hollow Knight, a topic for animated discussion and vivid recollections. Whether detested or adored, few can walk away from Deepnest without feeling deeply impacted by this marvel of chilling game design.
