Xak II, a venerable RPG, will launch on the Nintendo Switch on November 7 without English translation options, featuring only native Japanese text with some English navigational aids.

Classic RPG 'Xak II' Set for Nintendo Switch Release

Fans of classic role-playing games (RPGs) are in for a treat as D4 Enterprise announces the upcoming release of 'Xak II: Rising of the Red Moon' on the Nintendo Switch. Scheduled to drop on November 7, this game follows the release of its predecessor 'Xak: The Art of Visual Stage,' which made its Switch debut earlier in March. However, similar to its forerunner, 'Xak II' will be reissued largely in its original form, including the native Japanese text.

The launch of 'Xak II' is part of a series of classic game reissues under D4 Enterprise's EGGCONSOLE project. The game will maintain much of its original aesthetic and gameplay elements from when it was first released by Japanese developer Microcabin in 1990. The platforms it graced during its initial release include the MSX, PC-88, and PC-98, with subsequent ports to FM Towns computers and the Sharp X68000 in the early 90s.

For those unfamiliar with the game, 'Xak II' is set three years after the events of the first game in the series. Players step into the boots of the hero Latok Kart, who finds himself in the village of Banuwa searching for clues about his missing father. The narrative unfolds as Latok, along with his fairy companion, interacts with local villagers and gets entangled in a new adventure. This quest involves battling evil minions and thwarting their plan to summon a dangerous demon named Zamu Gospel.

One significant difference in gameplay from its predecessor is the absence of the Ys-like bump action system. Instead, 'Xak II' introduces a more traditional combat style where players can swing a sword to attack enemies and jump to navigate and overcome various obstacles.

Despite the excitement around its release, potential players should note that 'Xak II' will not include comprehensive English language support. The reissue will feature Japanese game text with only the main menu and a 'how to play' section available in English. This could present a challenge for non-Japanese speaking players who are interested in experiencing this classic RPG. The audience most likely to appreciate this release includes those fluent in Japanese or players who are willing to use live translation devices to aid their gameplay.

In addition to the basic game, D4 Enterprise has included a gallery section, presumably to showcase art and perhaps historical context about the game’s creation and its legacy. This addition will likely enhance the experience for fans and newcomers alike, providing a deeper appreciation of the game's artistic and developmental aspects.

As the gaming world continues to embrace reissues of classic titles, the decision to maintain the original language of 'Xak II' reflects a respect for the game's original context and a nod to its dedicated fanbase. However, it also underscores the challenges of making such games accessible to a global audience without full translation.

For enthusiasts of RPGs and gaming history, the release of 'Xak II' on the Switch offers a unique opportunity to experience a slice of gaming history firsthand. While the language barrier may be a hurdle, the game’s classic charm and engaging gameplay mechanics should still offer ample reward for those willing to embark on this nostalgic adventure. As we look forward to November 7, it will be interesting to see how new audiences and old fans alike respond to this classic RPG’s revival.
