The new Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 game is only 25% bigger than its predecessor, constrained by the Xbox Series S limitations.

Xbox Series S Specs Limit Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

In the evolving landscape of console gaming, game developers frequently encounter challenges posed by varying system specifications. One such instance has been highlighted by Warhorse Studios, the creators of the medieval role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The sequel to this acclaimed title, dubbed Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, is now facing development constraints due to the hardware limitations of the Xbox Series S console.

During the recent Game Access Conference, producer Martin Klíma provided insights into the development challenges. He pinpointed the 10GB of RAM available in the Xbox Series S as a significant limitation affecting the scope of their new game. In contrast, both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X consoles boast 16GB of RAM, offering more robust processing power which facilitates richer game development. This differential in capability has resulted in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 being only about 25% larger than its predecessor, a size limitation which, while still significant, fell short of the team's original visions.

Klíma's disclosure sheds light on the ongoing debate about the impacts of hardware discrepancies on game development. The Xbox Series S, being a more budget-friendly option in Microsoft’s lineup, has a reduced memory capacity which can curtail developers' ability to expand game features and enhance game complexity. This isn’t the first instance where developers have voiced concerns about the console. Similar grievances were aired regarding its role in the delayed release of Baldur's Gate 3 on Microsoft platforms.

Despite these limitations, Warhorse Studios is committed to pushing the boundaries of what they can achieve with the available hardware. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 promises to deliver an enriched experience with a game environment twice as big as the first installment and almost double the amount of cinematic content. The game aims to immerse players deeper into the life of Henry, the protagonist whose journey from a budding warrior to a rebel unfolds in an era marred by conflict and royal intrigue.

The narrative is set against a backdrop of historical events where Henry seeks vengeance for his murdered parents and becomes embroiled in a rebellion against King Sigismund of Hungary, also known as Sigismund the Red Fox. The story is enhanced with over five hours of cutscenes, designed to provide a compelling and visually captivating storytelling experience.

Adding to the technological aspects, Warhorse Studios highlighted that while Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will run at a 4K resolution at 30 frames per second on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S will target the same frame rate albeit at a lower resolution of 1440p. This adjustment ensures that players on different platforms can still enjoy a visually engaging experience, albeit tailored to the capabilities of their chosen console.

As the release for PS5 is anticipated later this year, the gaming community is keenly watching to see how well Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 translates its ambitious goals into a gaming experience that resonates with fans and newcomers alike. The game’s development journey highlights the ongoing challenges and trade-offs faced in the gaming industry, balancing technological limitations with creative ambitions. Despite these hurdles, the anticipation for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 continues to build, promising a new chapter in Henry’s saga that is both grander in scale and richer in detail.
