WWE 2K24 continues to build on its predecessor's success, offering new match types, an engaging 40 Years of WrestleMania showcase, and polished gameplay that promises hours of wrestling entertainment.

WWE 2K24 Xbox Review: A Show-stopping Evolution

As the anticipation for WrestleMania 40 swells, WWE fans can also look forward to stepping into the digital ring with the release of WWE 2K24. The game emerges as a celebration of wrestling's theatrical splendor, aiming to deliver an experience that mirrors the larger-than-life event. Though resembling its former iteration closely, WWE 2K24 ramps up the spectacle, presenting a game that's not radically different but one that exceeds its forerunner with subtler enhancements and refinements.

In-ring action remains familiar, focusing on delivering the most polished gameplay in the series. Key to this are incremental adjustments, such as the amusing ability to hurl weapons across the ring or engage in the new "Trading Blows" mini-game, aptly capturing the frenzied exchanges typical of contemporary matches. These modifications are far from groundbreaking, but they incrementally refine the familiar mechanics to create a more enjoyable wrestling game.

WWE 2K24 expands the already rich array of match types available to players. New additions include Ambulance, Casket, Special Referee, and Gauntlet matches, each meticulously crafted to inject varied dynamics into gameplay. They particularly shine during moments of intense button-mashing, reminiscent of bygone eras encapsulated in the old SmackDown Vs. Raw series. Whether through an upgraded Backstage Brawl or these new variations, the game boasts an impressive roster of battle options.

A marquee feature is the '40 Years of WrestleMania Showcase', inviting players to journey through the legacies carved out at WWE's flagship event. This mode employs objective-based gameplay interwoven with cutscenes and real-life footage, crafting an immersive narrative experience. Adhering strictly to key objectives might occasionally feel restrictive, but ultimately, it's an engaging way to relive legendary matches, even if some desired moments are conspicuously missing.

The single-player campaign, MyRise, returns with separate narratives for male and female created characters, retaining the essential structure from WWE 2K23 but with fresh storylines and detailed voice work from an array of WWE stars. With decision-based branching paths, the game lends replayability, encouraging players to explore different outcomes of their choices.

Many will find their favorite gameplay in MyGM mode, improved upon with features like trades and a leveling system, allowing a deeper management simulation as you build your brand and its wrestlers. It introduces an element of strategy that complements the in-ring action.

While MyFaction borrows from the Ultimate Team concept, offering various engagement methods, it has yet to wholly captivate players with its offerings. Meanwhile, Universe Mode returns with seemingly small overhauls, though the true depth of this mode often reveals itself over extensive playtime.

WWE 2K24 is a game with a wealth of content, undeniably designed to keep players grappling with its content for months. While the game reaches new heights for the series, it's not devoid of flaws. Players may find themselves tripped-up by familiar issues—collision detection imperfections, sporadic bugs, and sometimes unconvincing audience reactions. Some modes still feel as though they haven't quite hit their stride or exploited their fullest potential.

Nevertheless, WWE 2K24 seems to have focused on enhancing the robust foundation laid out by last year's entry. By spotlighting these strengths and providing a slicker, more comprehensive wrestling experience, it stands as a game where the positives considerably overshadow its shortcomings. It's a testament to the game's developers, who have listened to the fans and delivered a product that, while not revolutionizing the genre, positively evolves it—much like the sport it represents.
