Noname Studios debuts with Worldless, blending Final Fantasy-inspired turn-based combat with Metroidvania-style platforming in an ambitious first outing that stands out in a crowded genre.

Worldless Mixes Classic RPG with Platforming Magic

The video game industry is a vast ocean where countless genres and styles of play coexist, often overlapping and borrowing from one another to create novel experiences. One of the latest entrants into this mix is "Worldless," a title from a small, remote team called Noname Studios, founded in the midst of the pandemic in January 2021. With just seven people working full-time, the team endeavored to contribute something unique to the ever-popular Metroidvania genre, a feat that is increasingly difficult given the sheer volume of quality games released.

"Worldless" was a project ten years in the making. It started as an idea during the creative director Joel's university days and gradually took shape after he shared it with David Sanchez Garcia and another colleague, Carlos. A few years down the road, a working demo was developed in around six months of part-time, unstructured work, setting the stage for a full-fledged game. Once Noname Studios was established, Joel finally secured a deal with Coatsink, allowing for the full development of "Worldless."

The final product stayed true to the original vision, with only minor changes in scope and features. Its narrative is designed to be open to interpretation, fostering a mysterious environment where each player’s understanding of the story can be unique. Joel drew inspiration from the 2006 movie "The Fountain" to create this abstract narrative style.

Entering the Metroidvania arena was a challenge given its saturation. However, Noname Studios was confident their game should not be termed purely as a Metroidvania, as it lacked certain characteristics inherent to the genre. Instead, "Worldless" was conceived with a focus on novel combat, taking inspiration from games like "Final Fantasy" and "Devil May Cry." The aim was to merge the strategic depth of turn-based combat with the fast-paced action and style typical of the aforementioned influences.

The art of the game is a tale of creativity meeting limitations. The small team had aspirations for a vibrant and smooth animation style, but a fully animated, frame-by-frame traditional approach was too resource-intensive. A solution was found in the current style, which allowed Joel to create distinctive animations efficiently. This led to the minimalist art direction that the game carries, further justifying its unique standing.

Running "Worldless" on Nintendo Switch brought challenges, especially in memory management, as the game transitions smoothly without loading screens—a sophisticated feature considering even many open-world games struggle with this. Only minor texture downscaling was needed to ensure the game looked good and kept a steady 60 frames per second.

The game was well-received, but the team at Noname Studios isn't resting on their laurels. They are already tinkering with their next project, continuing their philosophy of doing things differently and introducing surprising mechanics. They aim to keep surprising players and maintain their place in the players' game libraries.

"Worldless" released on November 21st, and with a price tag that suggests the studio is confident in the quality of the experience they've created. It stands as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity thriving in the indie game development scene, signaling the arrival of a promising new player in the industry. The hope is that "Worldless" will carve its niche and leave a lasting impression on gamers eager for something fresh and different.
