Original Elaine Marley voice actress Alexandra Boyd reveals why she did not come back for 2023's Sea of Thieves expansion, attributing it to an unfair pay offer.

Voice Actress Discusses Her Absence from Sea of Thieves

Alexandra Boyd, the actress who lent her voice to the beloved character Elaine Marley in the Monkey Island game series, recently shared the story behind her noticeable absence in the 2023 Sea of Thieves expansion, Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island. Fans were expecting her return after her participation in Return to Monkey Island the year before, but instead, Emily O’Brien was brought in to replace her.

Boyd had become synonymous with the character, voicing Elaine in all Monkey Island games since the introduction of voice acting to the series. This excluded only a single instance in Escape From Monkey Island where Charity James temporarily took over. Boyd’s absence was especially felt this time around because she had just recently reprised the role.

In an interview with BBC journalist and adventure game streamer Laura Cress, Boyd finally shed light on the reasons for her decision. According to Boyd, her choice was a result of a payment proposal she deemed to be "unfair." The controversy arose amid a tumultuous time in the industry marked by strikes from writers and actors and growing concerns about AI and its potential to replace voice actors.

Boyd recounted the events leading up to the offer. After voicing Elaine Marley in the 2022 installment, Boyd was approached for another job, which turned out to be another opportunity within the Monkey Island series. She was initially excited, but soon became disappointed with the compensation offered to her. She was presented with a contract that promised the same payment as before, simply doubled – a figure she felt didn't reflect her substantial contribution to the series or the considerable profits it had generated over the years.

In the industry, the term ‘scale’ refers to the minimum payment actors in union productions are guaranteed. Boyd’s proposed salary was twice the industry scale plus an additional 10%, which, she argued, hardly accounted for the legacy she brought to the role or the negligible production costs in an era when games are often downloaded rather than physically produced.

Her frustration was compounded by the belief that the producers had a diminished appreciation for the craft of voice acting and were not fully considering fan loyalty to the original voice actors. Boyd viewed the offer as suggesting that her role, into which she had poured decades of creative energy, was easily replaceable.

Boyd attempted to negotiate for higher pay, advocating for what she considered a fairer reflection of her work’s value. However, the producers held firm, maintaining that the budget was fixed and equitable across the board for those involved in the project. Faced with an immovable pay scale and feeling undervalued, Boyd made the difficult choice to decline the role. Consequently, the producers proceeded with a recasting decision.

Boyd’s separation from the role was marked by a clear lack of animosity toward the producers, but she doesn't anticipate returning to the series in the future. She expressed doubt that a future project, such as a potential Elaine spin-off, would be able to accommodate her fee, and she emphasized her focus on retirement and other interests outside of voicing Elaine Marley.

The industry is witnessing a growing conversation about the value of voice actors, especially as technology advances and the potential for AI to replicate or replace human performers becomes more tangible. Boyd’s experience is not unique, as voice actors across entertainment mediums are grappling with how to ensure fair compensation for their work.

The situation highlights the intricate balance between business interests and creative recognition within the gaming industry. It raises important questions about how to proportionally reward the talents that bring game characters to life, a crucial element in creating the deep connections that fans like those of Monkey Island have with these virtual worlds.

As the industry evolves and new payment and employment models emerge, Boyd’s story serves as a reminder that behind every beloved character is a human performer whose artistic contributions are invaluable.
