Virtua Fighter's 32X incarnation is receiving an unusually deep technical revival. Fan modder SEGA MODEL KING, also known as WangDrum, is developing a PC-based project that re-renders the 1994 32X port's 3D content in high definition and raises its animation output to 60 frames per second. Rather than applying a straightforward image-scale effect to the old game, the work tackles a core limitation in how the original version positioned and drew its polygonal fighters.
The result places renewed attention on a release that has long occupied a peculiar place in Sega history. The 32X was short-lived, expensive, difficult to program for, and frequently remembered as an awkward stopgap between the Mega Drive and Saturn generations. Yet Virtua Fighter demonstrated what Sega's add-on could do when its specific strengths were carefully exploited. Its home conversion was clearly reduced from the Model 1 arcade game, but it delivered quick fights, responsive action, smooth movement, cartridge-like loading, and an ambitious approximation of the sound and music associated with the Saturn edition.

In practical terms, the polygon points that define characters and scenes remain tied to the low-resolution coordinate space even if the finished picture is sent to a larger display.
WangDrum's approach sidesteps that bottleneck by intercepting information earlier in the game's rendering process. Camera-space floating-point vertices, matrices, bones, and camera data are captured during the SH-2 interpreter's vertex and part transformation stage. That information is then used to reconstruct the coordinate space before the game's geometry, extracted from the ROM, is drawn again through a custom renderer operating in floating-point space.
This means the project is not merely stretching the 32X's original final framebuffer. The 3D geometry is being rendered without the old pixel grid dictating its smallest possible movement. The Mega Drive continues to handle the game's 2D elements, while the custom renderer takes responsibility for the polygonal portion. It is a hybrid arrangement that closely reflects the original division of labor while adapting it for a modern PC environment.
For viewers, the immediate benefit is a crisp HD presentation that makes the underlying construction of the 32X models much easier to appreciate. The port's fighters still look like products of the early polygon era, as they should, but their silhouettes, joints, clothing, and animation are no longer obscured by the limitations of a low-resolution signal.
60FPS changes the feel of the original
WangDrum has also added interpolation code intended to display the action at 60FPS instead of Virtua Fighter's original 30FPS. This is likely to be the project's most divisive enhancement among purists. Frame interpolation can make movement appear markedly smoother, especially in a fighting game built around kicks, throws, evasions, and quick shifts in stance. At the same time, the original cadence is part of how players remember the game's timing and visual character.
That tension is common in preservation and enhancement projects. Higher frame rates, sharper output, and reduced display artifacts can expose details that were always present in an old release but were difficult to see on period hardware. They can also alter the texture of a game enough that some players prefer the original presentation. It was not the definitive way to play Virtua Fighter, even in its own day, but it was an inventive and surprisingly capable solution to a formidable technical problem.
The HD PC project gives that solution a new context. It preserves the 32X port's identity instead of replacing it with a modernized interpretation, while using reconstructed rendering data to free its polygon work from the display restrictions imposed by 1994 hardware.
