Addressing the creative antics of some streamers, Twitch has clamped down on "implied nudity." This term includes situations where content creators appear to be nude but use clever camera angles and strategically placed censor bars to maintain a veneer of modesty. Chief Customer Trust Officer at Twitch, Angela Hession, explains that although most streamers mark their content with a 'Sexual Themes' label and actually dress off-camera, the thumbnails alone can still disturb users navigating the platform. These concerns have propelled Twitch to reinforce its policy; there's a push for complete opaqueness in clothing, banning translucent or partially see-through materials.
As part of these revisions, Twitch insists on proper classification of stream content. Streamers who choose settings like pools or hot tubs are required to categorize their streams under "Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches." This helps viewers better anticipate the type of content they'll encounter. However, while the cleavage remains 'unrestricted', the underbust — the area below the breasts —has been deemed unsuitable for display.
An effort to refine content moderation tools is also underway. Twitch developers are focusing on introducing blurring features for thumbnails marked 'Sexual Themes' and creating search filters that adhere to users' content label preferences. Moving forward, the attire policy has been outlined more explicitly:
1. Nudity of any degree, including full, partial, or implied, is prohibited. This includes the display of genitals or buttocks, with no exceptions.
2. The portrayal of streamers as if they are nude, such as covering up specific body parts with objects or censorship graphic designs, is disallowed.
3. Visible outlines of genitals, even when clothed, are not permitted.
4. Depictions of nude minors, even contextually, are strictly forbidden.
5. Female streamers are expected to cover their nipples and avoid underbust exposure, though cleavage remains unrestricted as long as it's apparent that clothing is worn.
6. All streamers are required to cover from the hips to the bottom of the pelvis and buttocks.
Previously, Twitch retracted a policy that permitted depictions of "fictionalized nudity" when labeled accordingly. The decision was reversed following reflection on the difficulty in differentiating between digital art and real imagery, acknowledging the unique challenges that digital depictions of nudity can pose.
These updates highlight the ongoing battle for platforms like Twitch to balance content that might cater to adult audiences while not infringing upon age ratings or societal norms.
