Trinity Fusion, a game that debuted to much anticipation after its showcase at PAX East, has finally landed on the Nintendo Switch, confirming that it was worth the wait. This game introduces players to a fascinating scenario where a human-made multiverse, comprising different realms such as Prime, the Overworld, the Underworld, and the Hyperworld, is on the brink of collapse. The solution? Merge these disparate worlds into one.
In this dire situation, players assume the roles of Maya's three counterselves: Altara, Kera, and Naira, who are essentially different versions of the same woman from alternate dimensions. Each character is uniquely equipped with distinct abilities that enhance gameplay. Altara benefits from advanced ranged weaponry due to her prosthetic arm and also possesses a double jump capability. Naira, on the other hand, excels in wall jumping, while Kera is adept at launching enemies into the air and executing thrilling air combos.
Starting the game, players choose their preferred character and delve into that character's specific realm. These realms are diverse, ranging from a failed agricultural world overrun by mutated wildlife, a machine-dominated landscape where humans are deemed oppressors, to a post-human city ruled by cyborgs known as the Ewer. Initially, each character is restricted to their respective worlds, and players must clear all realms to achieve the fusion of worlds.
Trinity Fusion is ingeniously structured as a sidescrolling Metroidvania roguelite. During each run, players accumulate Amplifiers, which are temporary boosts enhancing player abilities such as slowing enemy projectiles, increasing critical strike chances, or converting defeated enemies into beneficial bombs. Amassing three identical Amplifiers transforms them into a permanent Powerup for the remainder of the run, continually raising the stakes and variability of gameplay.
The heart of Trinity Fusion lies in its combat system. Each version of Maya is armed with a Primary weapon to build energy and an Energy weapon for unleashing more powerful attacks. Diverse arsenals between the characters, such as Naira’s focus on firearms and Kera’s melee dominance, contribute to a rich combat experience where strategy and weapon management are key. Successfully navigating through various enemy defenses and exploiting their weaknesses using the right weapons is a delightful and engaging challenge.
The game also offers a fusion mechanism, allowing players to combine characters, thus unlocking new weapons and abilities. This feature not only allows for diverse gameplay strategies but also enhances character mobility and combat efficiency, opening new doors for exploration and enemy engagements.
Boss battles present pivotal checkpoints in the game, with victories granting new traversal abilities like Altara's drone, which teleports her to new areas, expanding gameplay horizons. Each area presents multiple exit points—one leading to the next biome and another to The In-Between, a space that offers hefty upgrades at increased risks.
However, death in Trinity Fusion is as instructive as it is punitive, sending players back to the Citadel, the central hub in Prime, where additional character insights unfold. Here, players can leverage special resources acquired during runs to bolster their starting health, unlock resurrection capabilities, or enhance their weaponry.
Despite the captivating gameplay, Trinity Fusion does encounter some technical drawbacks on the Nintendo Switch, such as occasional lengthy load times, less-than-optimal resolution when docked, and frequent game crashes that can interrupt the experience. One particularly notable bug required a restart of the save file during the tutorial phase due to a malfunction that halted both player and enemy attacks.
Nevertheless, Trinity Fusion remains a compelling addition to the Switch library. The game's combination of an intriguing multiverse narrative, dynamic combat, and visually engaging realms are likely to pull players back into its challenging yet rewarding loops, hoping that future updates will resolve its existing technical issues for an even smoother gaming experience.
