The beloved video game, Trials of Mana, is being adapted into a stage play for its 30th anniversary, featuring performances in Tokyo and Osaka next year.

Trials of Mana Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Stage Play

Trials of Mana, a classic video game cherished by many, is marking its 30th anniversary in a grand fashion by transitioning from screen to stage. This important milestone will be celebrated through a special stage play adaptation in Japan, highlighting its enduring legacy in the gaming community.

Originally released in 1995 in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 3, Trials of Mana is the third entry in the acclaimed Mana series, following the success of the SNES classic Secret of Mana. Despite its popularity in Japan, the game was not available in the West until 2019. It was then included in the Collection of Mana compilation for the Nintendo Switch, allowing a broader audience to experience its magic. In 2020, the game was remade for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PS4, PC, Android, iOS, and Xbox Series X|S. This remake featured significant changes, such as the introduction of fully 3D models and the removal of multiplayer features, offering a fresh take on the traditional gameplay and aesthetics.

The plot of Trials of Mana revolves around a gripping adventure where heroes embark on a quest to find the legendary Sword of Mana. Their goal is to save the Mana Tree and stop the malevolent group of monsters known as the Benevodons from causing destruction across the world.

This narrative is the foundation for the upcoming stage play, which promises to bring the epic journey and its characters to life in a new format. The play is scheduled to run from March 7th to March 16th at the Sunshine Theatre in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, and will continue from April 4th to April 6th at the TT Hall at Cool Japan Park in Osaka.

For those eager to secure their attendance, a lottery for advanced tickets is currently open on the Plus A website until November 18th, with general ticket sales beginning on February 2nd, 2025. The price for general tickets is set at ¥12,100, with a premium upgrade available for an additional ¥3,300, ensuring that fans can choose the experience that best suits their preferences.

The cast of the play includes talented actors who will portray the game’s iconic heroes. Kai Ogasawara will step into the role of Duran, while Ruito Aoyagi will take on the character of Kevin. Angela will be played by Haruna Iikubo, with Karin Isobe as Riesz, Haruse Akune as Hawkeye, and Amisa Miyazaki as Charlotte. This ensemble is set to recreate the magical and adventurous spirit of the original game.

Adding to the nostalgia, Hiroki Kikuta, who composed the music for Secret of Mana and the original Trials of Mana, will provide the score for the stage play. His music, known for its ability to evoke the essence of the Mana world, will undoubtedly enrich the theatrical experience.

The adaptation of Trials of Mana into a stage play not only celebrates the game's 30th anniversary but also underscores its significant impact on the gaming industry and its cultural legacy. By bringing the game’s enchanting world and story to the stage, new and old fans alike can experience the magic of Mana in a captivating new way. This stage adaptation promises to be a heartfelt tribute to the adventures and characters that have captured the hearts of players around the world.
