Nintendo enriches its Switch Online Expansion Pack with three beloved Sega Genesis titles, currently exclusive to Japan.

Three Classic Sega Games Added to Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has recently expanded its Switch Online Expansion Pack offerings by including three more classic games from the Sega Genesis era, much to the delight of retro gaming enthusiasts. This update, however, is currently available exclusively in Japan, with no immediate details about a wider global release.

The Sega Genesis, also known as the Mega Drive outside of North America, is a console that holds a special place in the hearts of 90s gamers. Its rich library of games has continued to resonate with fans over the decades. Recognizing the nostalgic appeal, Nintendo has been strategically adding Sega Genesis games to its Switch Online service, which allows subscribers to play a growing array of classic games on its modern console.

The latest additions to this service are "Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron," "Vectorman," and "Mercs." Each of these games brings its unique flavor to the platform, offering diverse gameplay experiences that range from alien adventures to intense combat situations.

"Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron" is the sequel to the original "Toejam & Earl." It diverges from the first game's rogue-like exploration mechanics, focusing instead on a more straightforward platforming experience. In this installment, Toejam and Earl, the funky extraterrestrial duo, are tasked with capturing Earthlings who have stowed away on their spaceship and are wreaking havoc on their home planet, Funkotron. The game is celebrated for its quirky humor, funky soundtrack, and vibrant visuals.

"Vectorman" is a run-and-gun platformer that was ahead of its time with graphics that utilized pre-rendered 3D models to create an illusion of depth, a technique that was pioneering in the 16-bit era. Players control Vectorman, a robotic orb who battles through various levels to save Earth from an evil overlord. The game is renowned for its challenging gameplay and was considered a technical masterpiece of its time.

"Mercs," originally an arcade game before being ported to the Sega Genesis, is a top-down shooter where players assume the role of mercenaries on rescue missions in hostile territories. The game offers explosive action and was notable for its cooperative play mode, which added a layer of strategy as players had to coordinate their movements and attacks.

Presently, these games have been added to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive app for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, but only in Japan. The reasons for the regional exclusivity have not been disclosed, leaving international fans hopeful for a future update that will grant them access to these classics.
