AionGuard was a promising fantasy RPG project by Avalanche Studios for PS3 and Xbox 360 that never saw the light of day. Here's what happened.

The Unseen Potential of AionGuard, a Fantasy RPG

Back in 2009, the gaming world buzzed with excitement about AionGuard, a high-concept fantasy RPG that aimed to rejuvenate the "sword and sorcery" genre. Slated for release on the PS3 and Xbox 360, this ambitious project from Avalanche Studios captured the interest of many, including dedicated readers of EDGE magazine. The game featured on the cover of EDGE’s February 2009 issue, where it was glorified across an extensive eight-page article filled with vivid screenshots and engaging interviews. This coverage was supposed to propel AionGuard towards success, but sadly, it marked the beginning of a series of unfortunate events leading to its eventual cancellation.

The origin story of AionGuard revealed a tumultuous journey even before it caught the public eye. Christofer Sundberg, founder of Avalanche Studios, detailed in interviews how the game transitioned from being a massive war-themed project to exploring science fiction themes, and finally settling into the realm of fantasy. Initially helmed in collaboration with a major publisher, believed to be EIDOS, the project underwent changes in leadership and vision before Avalanche decided to buy back the rights and attempt to sell it to other interested parties.

However, it was under Disney’s patronage that AionGuard began taking shape. In the early phase of development, Martin Alltimes, a former employee at Disney Interactive, painted a picture of the corporate climate during his tenure. When Michael Eisner was at the helm, Disney had ambitious plans to extend its reach beyond children's entertainment to more mature, expansive media ventures including video games. This was evident from their investments in titles like Turok. But the internal dynamics at Disney shifted dramatically with the appointment of Bob Iger as CEO, redirecting the company’s focus back to family-friendly and iconic Disney-branded offerings.

Despite these changing tides, Avalanche proceeded with AionGuard, crafting a demo that showcased a breathtaking world where players wielded extraordinary powers battling against hordes of enemies and dragons. Described by Alltimes as a “fantasy GTA," the demo featured action-packed sequences and remarkable magic-infused combat. However, concerns from Disney about the game’s dark tone led to demands for a lighter, more Disney-like approach, clashing with the original vision of the developers.

As the developers attempted to address these concerns, the essence of AionGuard began to dilute, likening its transformation to turning into a “Disney princess” game. Faced with continued insistence on altering the game's direction, and in alignment with changes in Disney’s strategic interests, the decision was painfully made to shelve the project. This decision, although agonizing for the team who had already laid strong creative foundations, was seen as a merciful end compared to the potential gradual erosion of the game’s core identity.

The narrative of AionGuard, filled with potential and imagination, is a poignant reminder of the complexities and challenges in the video game industry, particularly regarding creative visions aligning with corporate strategies. The game's cancellation left a void for what could have been a revolutionary step in the fantasy RPG genre. As no substantial footage or further development emerged post-cancellation, the legacy of AionGuard remains frozen in time, preserved only in screenshots, concept art, and the imaginations of those who glimpsed its potential.

Today, as we look back, AionGuard represents not just a lost gaming treasure but also a case study on the impact of shifting business strategies on artistic projects. While the project ended prematurely, the creativity and ambition of AionNext serve as an inspiration for developers and a cautionary tale of navigating the tricky waters of the gaming industry. Perhaps in the future, the vision of AionGuard will be realized in new forms under new stewards, as the quest for bringing innovative and exciting fantasy worlds to life continues in the gaming community.
