The Game Awards, an annual celebration of the video game industry's achievements, has once again come and gone, leaving us with plenty to talk about, including how well fans were able to predict the events and outcomes.
Let's dive into the anticipated results of the prediction quiz participated in by the Push Square community. Last year, the community scored an impressive 14 out of 20 correct predictions. The pressure was on to see if they could outdo themselves for The Game Awards 2023.
Kicking things off, fans were asked whether Geoff Keighley, the host, would sport a tie when he first graced the stage. Just over half the voters said "yes," and indeed, Keighley dressed to impress with a tie, starting the quiz on a positive note.
One early hiccup was predicting a brand new PlayStation Studios game announcement, which did not happen this year. Equally unexpected was Marvel's Spider-Man 2 leaving the awards empty-handed, despite three-quarters of the community backing it to win.
However, the players' ability to detect trends was on point with the Players' Choice award, as they correctly guessed that Genshin Impact would not take home the trophy. The community also correctly foresaw no new Star Wars game announcement and accurately called the early 2024 release for the first Final Fantasy 16 expansion.
On the other hand, contrary to the majority's belief, there was a new Monster Hunter game revealed—Monster Hunter Wilds—proving a thrilling surprise and showcasing a rare miss for the community's insight.
Remaining predictions were a mixed bag. Votes correctly anticipated that PlayStation boss Jim Ryan would not appear, and that there wouldn't be a lengthy Death Stranding 2 trailer. They accurately guessed Diablo 4 wouldn’t win any awards, and astutely sensed that Hideo Kojima and Geoff Keighley would share a stage embrace.
Nevertheless, the quiz posed questions tricky by nature, which led to some incorrect assumptions by the community. They overestimated the number of brand-new games for PS5 that would be announced and mistook the awards' potential to entice longwinded acceptance speeches, which did not transpire.
The fans cautiously (and correctly) predicted that fewer than three remakes or remasters for PS5 would be announced and that Alan Wake 2 wouldn't sweep the awards with more than three wins. And they were spot-on in guessing Borderlands would stay off the agenda. However, the absence of any mention of Grand Theft Auto 6, just after its big reveal trailer, was another unexpected outcome that went against the community's predictions.
In another unexpected turn, the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was nowhere to be seen, despite strong belief in an appearance. They also underestimated the presence of God of War's Kratos, who was mentioned during the show, contrary to the slightly predominant community vote.
Finally, the community confidently and correctly asserted that Baldur's Gate 3 would claim the Game of the Year accolade, concluding the quiz on a positive note.
With a final score of 11 out of 20, the community scored more than half of its predictions correctly. Although they didn't surpass last year's performance, considering the surprises this year's event brought, this can still be considered a respectable feat. Some questions were indeed quite a challenge, yet the gamers showed commendable foresight in the ever-unpredictable world of video gaming. Now, all eyes turn to next year, with gamers ready to put their prediction skills to the test once more for The Game Awards 2024.
