The Arbiter Armor is one of the most desirable equipment sets in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and earning it requires more than simply looting a chest or defeating a single powerful enemy. The full set is tied to A Bulwark Against Darkness, a quest built around gathering four unusual materials from across Vale Sangora before bringing them to a specialist capable of forging them into something useful.

The quest sends players through several very different activities and locations. One component can be collected while handling a Murohn during a Sanzhana quest, another comes from relic-related content around St. Tyna's Monastery, a third sits in Aurelius' tower, and the last is hidden in a Tatselwurm-filled cave near the Briar Sloughs. Once everything has been gathered, the job is still not over: the Uriashi Blacksmith begins a ritual that ends in fights against spirit wolves and a bear.

It is a substantial detour, but the reward is an enhanced four-piece armor set with benefits intended to support both of the protagonist's forms. Here is how to begin A Bulwark Against Darkness, where to look for every item, and what to expect during the final crafting ritual.

How to start A Bulwark Against Darkness

The route to the Arbiter Armor begins when the player receives and reads a Smuggler's Letter. The note identifies the materials required for the set and makes clear that a blacksmith will be needed to combine them.

For useful background on this topic, read Mega Darkula Brings a Light-Smashing Vampire Adventure to Sega Mega Drive.

There are multiple ways the letter can reach the player. One known trigger is reaching Infamy Level 4 and then speaking with Anca at the Crossroads Inn. In that scenario, Anca explains that a letter has been sent. It is also possible for a smuggler to hand over the note while exploring Svartrau.

Because the letter can arrive through more than one progression path, players who have not received it through Anca should not assume the quest has been permanently missed. Continue exploring Svartrau, pay attention to smuggler encounters, and read the letter once it becomes available to formally begin the hunt.

Before committing to the collection process, it can be worthwhile to invest in armor proficiency perks. The Arbiter set is powerful, but its effectiveness will be better reflected when the character has the appropriate proficiencies to make the most of heavy defensive gear and its bonuses.

Every Arbiter Armor crafting component

A Bulwark Against Darkness requires four items: a Bundle of Silk Threads, a Relic of a Saint, a Flask of Quicksilver, and a Moult of a Large Lizard. Some categories have more than one possible solution, particularly the relic requirement, while other materials currently appear to have a single known location.

Bundle of Silk Threads

There are two known ways to obtain the silk threads, both connected to Sanzhana-related areas in Vale Sangora.

The more expensive route appears in the Pearly and Precious quest. One of the fairies involved in that activity can sell a Bundle of Silk Threads for 6,000 Denarius. This is a direct option for players with spare currency, but it is hardly the most economical choice.

A more appealing alternative is tied to the Come Hither quest. That quest leads into a cavern where players must confront a Murohn boss. After dealing with the boss, search the arena carefully. The Bundle of Silk Threads is resting on a rock in the same area and can be picked up without paying anything or suffering any additional consequence.

For most players, the Come Hither route offers better value. It pairs the component with a quest encounter and avoids draining a large amount of Denarius that may be useful for other purchases.

Relic of a Saint

The relic slot is the most flexible part of the recipe. Multiple saintly relics can apparently satisfy this requirement, meaning players have options if they already completed certain quests or made choices that sent them in another direction.

A particularly useful place to search is St. Tyna's Monastery during Anca's Echoes of the Silenced Bells questline. Players progressing through that content may acquire two viable relics. The Saint's Tibia can be found on a body beside the building where soldiers are hiding. The Relic of St. Tyna, an amulet requested by the soldiers, can also be used as an Arbiter Armor ingredient.

That second choice deserves caution. The Relic of St. Tyna has its own purpose, so using it in the armor recipe means giving up an item that may otherwise be valuable. Players should decide whether the immediate goal of finishing the Arbiter set is worth consuming an amulet with another function.

If the monastery opportunities have already passed, the quest is not necessarily blocked. Another relic can be obtained through Lacra during The Night of Horrors. Relics may also be purchased from Vicho in Svartrau. This flexibility makes the saint relic considerably less restrictive than the quicksilver flask or the large lizard moult.

Flask of Quicksilver

The known Flask of Quicksilver is located at the top of Aurelius' tower, in the southern portion of the map. Players following the Rebels' storyline eventually visit the tower during the Home Sweet Home quest.

Once that activity has been completed, head to the tower's highest room. Look to the left of the hanging golem. The flask is on a table in that room, rather than hidden behind a puzzle or requiring a separate merchant transaction.

Since only one currently known flask fulfills this role, make a point of collecting it when the tower is accessible. It is easy to focus on the larger story objective in the area and leave without inspecting the top room thoroughly.

Moult of a Large Lizard

The final material is found in an unmarked cave near the boundary between the Briar Sloughs and Maragir Wealds. The cave lies east of the Briar Sloughs bog and is occupied by multiple Tatselwurms.

Clear the enemies inside before searching for the material. The moult is located toward the rear of the cave, and using Focus mode makes the abandoned shedding easier to identify among the darker surroundings and creature-infested terrain.

As with the quicksilver flask, this appears to be a single known solution for the recipe. The cave may not carry a prominent map marker, so it is worth being methodical while exploring the region rather than waiting for a quest icon to lead directly to it.

Where to craft the set

With all four materials in hand, travel to the Uriashi Blacksmith in the northwest. Players who pursued the quest connected to the game's best weapon may already know this character and location, making the final hand-in relatively straightforward.

Give the blacksmith the Bundle of Silk Threads, a qualifying saint relic, the Flask of Quicksilver, and the Moult of a Large Lizard. Rather than immediately receiving a completed suit of armor, the player is pulled into a ritual sequence.

The ritual includes combat against spirit wolves followed by a bear boss. By the time all four ingredients have been found, players should have encountered enough dangerous fights to understand the fundamentals needed for these battles. Still, it is sensible to arrive prepared, with healing supplies and equipment maintained before beginning the encounter.

Arbiter Armor set pieces and upgrade advice

After the ritual is complete, the Uriashi Blacksmith awards the full Arbiter Armor set. It consists of four enhanced items:

  • Enhanced Armor of the Arbiter for the chest slot
  • Enhanced Shin Guards of the Arbiter for the leg slot
  • Enhanced Bracers of the Arbiter for the arm slot
  • Enhanced Boots of the Arbiter for the foot slot

The set is recognizable as the armor featured in the game's cover and promotional imagery. More importantly, it has a broad collection of buffs suited to both daytime human play and the protagonist's vampire capabilities at night. That versatility is a major part of its appeal: it is not narrowly built around only one side of the game's identity.

Obtaining the suit should not be treated as the end of its progression. Keep the Arbiter Armor upgraded as the character's level rises. A top-tier set that falls behind in upgrades will not provide the same practical protection or value as one maintained alongside the rest of the build.

For players looking to pair defense with stronger offense, the armor quest also fits naturally alongside the path that leads to the legendary Sword of St. Mihai. Whether the goal is a resilient day-and-night setup or simply collecting one of the game's standout visual sets, A Bulwark Against Darkness is a quest worth completing once its Smuggler's Letter arrives.
