Reviewing PO'ed: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch - a revived '90s FPS classic by Nightdive Studios, featuring unconventional gameplay, large levels equipped with jetpacks, and distinctive enemy designs.

PO'ed: Definitive Edition - A Unique and Quirky FPS Journey

PO’ed: Definitive Edition reintroduces a forgotten game with considerable flair and some modern twists. Originally developed by Any Channel and first seen on the 3DO platform in the 1990s, the game was notable for its unusual approach and offbeat humor. Nightdive Studios, recognized for their work on the Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster, took on the challenge of reviving this distinctive game, applying their expertise to enhance its presentation and playability while preserving its original spirit.

In PO’ed, players assume the role of a chef who finds himself stranded on a bizarre alien planet. Armed with unconventional weapons ranging from frying pans to rocket launchers, the gameplay is primarily about survival and exploration. The underlying story is lightly touched upon, allowing players to focus more on the action and exploration rather than narrative depth.

One of the standout features of PO'ed is the level design. The environments are vast and facilitate extensive exploration, especially with early access to a jetpack. This gadget allows players to maneuver in expansive open spaces and discover hidden pathways or shortcuts, creating a unique vertical dimension to gameplay that is rarely emphasized in other shooters.

However, navigation is not always straightforward. The game features labyrinthine levels that can sometimes frustrate players due to their complexity and the obscure pathways required to progress. On occasion, even illusionary walls stand in the way, making certain sections of the game particularly perplexing and difficult to navigate without external help.

Combat in PO'ed can be rewarding yet challenging. The game boasts a broad array of enemies to defeat and records the count of adversaries eliminated, providing players with the incentive to engage rather than evade. Nevertheless, weapon precision is mixed. While some guns spread fire erratically, making them hard to use effectively, others offer more forgiving blast radii or require less precision, allowing for more freewheeling assault tactics.

Nightdive has integrated gyro aiming to refine the shooting mechanics, a common feature in their game ports, which significantly aids in fine-tuning shots. Players can adjust the sensitivity of this feature to match their play style, which helps in managing the diverse and often challenging enemy roster that requires quick reflexes and sharp shooting skills.

Aesthetically, PO'ed retains much of its original charm with bizarre and humorous enemy designs that defy conventional game aesthetics. These include menacing red lips with protruding teeth and muscled legs fitted with a grotesquely placed mouth, among others. The game operates devoid of background music, relying on unusual sound effects and vocal expressions to enrich the quirky, oddball atmosphere.

Nightdive’s dedication to enhancing the game’s interface and general presentation is evident. PO'ed runs smoothly at 60fps on the Nintendo Switch without noticeable drops, even when docked. Players can expect crisp visuals whether they are playing in handheld or on a larger screen. The game also offers a range of adjustable settings to either enhance or strip back modern improvements for those seeking a more authentic retro experience.

While PO'ed: Definitive Edition might not appeal to everyone due to its eccentric and unconventional nature, it is a commendable revival of a game that many had forgotten. Its peculiar charm, combined with enhanced mechanics and the freedom of exploration it offers, make it a fascinating, albeit niche, addition to the Switch’s library of remastered classics. For those open to its quirks, PO'ed provides a uniquely entertaining experience that stands out from the usual fare.
