Phantom Blade Zero merges fast-paced combat with strategic gameplay, providing a refreshing divergence from traditional Soulslike games, favoring a style closer to Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.

Phantom Blade Zero Energizes PS5 with Thrilling Action

The gaming landscape has seen a surge in the popularity of Soulslike games, which often feature punishing gameplay and a somber atmosphere. However, Phantom Blade Zero is set to shake up the scene with a refreshing twist, channeling the high-energy spirit of classic action games like Devil May Cry. Developed by S-GAME, this title is a standout among the variety showcased at the Summer Game Fest Play Days, captivating players with its expressive combat and flashy aesthetics.

Over a brief but impactful twenty-minute demo, players experienced a variety of combat scenarios that put their skills to the test against both ordinary enemies and formidable bosses. Despite its somewhat bleak and Soulslike appearance in static images, Phantom Blade Zero in motion reveals a much quicker and more fluid fighting style. The game presents a fusion of the precise combat seen in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and the more flamboyant action of games like Bayonetta, creating a unique niche within its genre.

Players are equipped with two primary weapons, each offering distinct advantages and combat styles. Options range from a balanced katana and swift dual blades, to larger, more powerful swords, allowing for a versatile approach to combat. Executing complex combos is straightforward, requiring only simple button combinations that make the game accessible while retaining a layer of challenge. Quick reflexes are necessary as battles conclude swiftly, with the risk of sudden defeat if enemies gain the upper hand. However, the game provides ample defensive tactics through dodging, blocking, and parrying, which are crucial for surviving the rapid encounters.

One of the game’s innovative features is the introduction of Phantom Edges—special equipment that add a layer of diversity to the player's moveset. During the gameplay demo, additional weapons like a bow and arrows for ranged attacks, a chargeable cannon blast, and a flamethrower were utilized to control crowds and target enemies efficiently. Players are encouraged to adopt an aggressive style, pressuring enemies to lower their defenses before delivering devastating finishing moves. Mastering the timing for perfect parries and dodges triggers powerful counterattacks, essential for breaking enemies' stance and gaining the upper hand.

The gameplay shines particularly during boss fights, which combine the strategic use of the arena with the game’s dynamic combat mechanics. In one memorable encounter, players fought against a boss wielding a giant spinning blade within the confines of an ornate temple. Strategic elements such as using pillars to launch attacks played a crucial role, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness in addition to combat prowess.

While there are some minor graphical imperfections, they are barely noticeable amidst the game’s fluid animation and consistent performance. These elements ensure that the focus remains on the thrilling combat experience, which is both visually striking and satisfying to engage with.

Phantom Blade Zero is poised to become a must-play title for fans of action-packed games who may feel overwhelmed by the recent influx of more methodical, punishing Soulslike games. Although a release date has yet been confirmed, its debut on the PS5 promises to bring a welcome dose of high-octane excitement and strategic depth to the console's library.
