Riv Hester, the solo developer behind Pepper Grinder, shares insights into the game's development process, game feel, and retro influences during a detailed interview.

Pepper Grinder: A Solo Dev’s Retro-Inspired Platformer

Pepper Grinder has been a labor of love for solo developer Riv Hester of studio Ahr Ech. It's a game where players control a pirate named Pepper, who, along with their drill companion Grinder, embarks on a mission to retrieve their stolen treasure. It's a game that promises excitement, blending familiar elements reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog, Drill Dozer, and Shovel Knight into a unique platforming experience. After seven years, Pepper Grinder has finally made its debut on the Nintendo Switch, and the reception has been positive to the point of a near-perfect review score.

Riv Hester's journey with Pepper Grinder began long before its March release. He envisioned creating a game filled with tight, responsive mechanics—something he personally sought as a player. Indeed, when asked about how the game's core concepts evolved over the years, Hester explained that while the core remained consistent, his focus was on refining and expanding those concepts to make them feel polished at release.

One of the standout features of Pepper Grinder is its fluid and satisfying drilling mechanic, which allows players to navigate through stages with ease. Hester emphasized the importance of “game feel” and the joy derived from seamless movement in a good platformer. To that end, he invested considerable effort into ensuring that the core movement was rewarding, supported by "crunchy feedback" from sound effects, screenshake, and controller rumble, with options to adjust these sensory effects.

Aside from the thrill of drilling through stages, Pepper Grinder offers collectibles and time trial challenges to enhance its replay value. Inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's Trophy system, the game features a sticker system that allows players to collect and arrange stickers within various unlockable backgrounds—a nod to Hester's love of the nostalgia and depth that Melee's unlockables provided.

As for the game’s visual identity, Pepper Grinder taps into the neo-retro aesthetic popular among indie titles today. Hester's decision to use pixel art was as much a practical choice for a solo developer as it was a stylistic one, enabling faster production without comprising the intricacy of the game's design.

Marketing efforts, including a SNES-inspired digital game manual, were crafted in collaboration with publisher Devolver Digital. The publisher helped maintain the game's aesthetic, leveraging access to all game assets to create promotional materials that aligned with Hester's vision for Pepper Grinder.

Working as a solo developer introduced unique challenges, the greatest of which, according to Hester, involved managing the game’s scope and ensuring his ambitions did not exceed what one person could handle. He aimed to introduce unique mechanics in each stage, necessitating careful planning and forethought to adapt ideas across various environments and ensure cohesive interaction among different game elements.

As for what lies ahead, Hester envisions taking a well-deserved break before tackling new game projects—potentially with shorter development cycles. While he expresses an openness to revisiting the world of Pepper Grinder in the future, he feels the need to explore other ideas and return to Pepper with a clear, refreshed perspective.

Pepper Grinder’s switch debut has been noteworthy, capturing both the essence of classic platformers and the innovation of fresh game mechanics, sealed with a personal touch from its dedicated creator. Riv Hester's journey highlights not only the passion and challenges of indie game development but also the vibrant and diverse community of gamers eagerly awaiting the next novel gaming experience. If this glimpse into Hester’s development process sparks your interest, Pepper Grinder is ready and waiting to be played on the Switch, with even a free demo available for those curious about this neo-retro adventure.

Hey there! I'm Darryl Polo, and I've been deep in the web design and blogging game for over 20 years. It's been a wild journey, evolving with the digital age, crafting websites, and sharing stories online. But hey, when I'm not behind the screen, you'll likely spot me rocking my all-time favorite kicks, the Air Jordan 4s. And after a day of design? Nothing beats unwinding with some Call of Duty action or diving into platformer games. It's all about balance, right? Pixels by day, platforms by night!
