Nintendo, the renowned video game company, has recently shared its quarterly financial results which have disclosed a remarkable milestone for its popular gaming console, the Nintendo Switch. Since its release in March 2017, the Switch has now sold a staggering 139.36 million units as of December 31st, 2023. This figure has seen a significant climb from the 132.46 million units reported in November. The success of the Nintendo Switch has led the company to increase its forecast for hardware sales as well as its overall profit for the year, thanks to a robust holiday season.
Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, has made it clear that the current model of the Switch will continue to be the centerpiece of the company's business strategy as it enters 2024. During a conference call following the financial report, Furukawa was asked about the upcoming hardware but he chose to keep the details under wraps. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s projections are optimistic. It aims to sell another 15.5 million Switch units before the fiscal year ends in March, which has been adjusted upward by 500,000 units along with an additional 5 million software units.
Even after almost seven years in the market, the Switch continues to exceed sales expectations. While overall sales were down 6% year-on-year, this was smaller than anticipated for a console at this stage in its lifecycle. The durability of the Switch's appeal is particularly noteworthy amid persistent rumors and anticipation for new Nintendo hardware.
The company's earnings not only benefitted from hardware but also saw a surge in other sectors. Gross profit climbed 11.5% year-on-year, operating profit rose 13.1%, and revenue from "mobile and IP related business" surged by an impressive 93.4%. This success is attributed to an increase in movie-related sales and higher royalty income. The financial report also notes that the demand for the Switch was not just from first-time buyers but also from customers looking to make additional or replacement purchases.
The breakdown of sales among the various models of the Switch indicated that the OLED model remains the most popular choice. This is illustrated by its sales figures for the April-December period of 2023, which surpassed the prior year’s numbers. Moreover, the company celebrated an all-time high with over 122 million users engaging with software in 2023.
If we scrutinize the hardware figures a bit more closely, here's what Nintendo's report showed:
- Total Switch hardware sales for FY2024 (April-December): 13.74 million
- Total Standard Switch sales: 3.4 million
- Total Switch OLED sales: 8.17 million
- Total Switch Lite sales: 2.18 million
Comparatively, historical data reveals that the Switch ranks as the second-highest-selling console in Nintendo's lineup, trailing behind the DS, which sits at 154.02 million units sold. The Switch's robust sales trajectory, however, suggests that it has the potential to reach and maybe even surpass the DS figures in the near future.
Despite the persistent speculation around a new model dubbed 'Switch 2', Nintendo appears to be focusing firmly on the current Switch, perhaps indicating that any announcements of new hardware may still be off in the distance. This strategy seems to be part of a larger plan to sustain the Switch's sales momentum and capitalize on its extensive user base, which could further solidify its position in the gaming industry.
Fans and industry watchers alike are curious about what Nintendo has planned for its hardware lineup, but for now, it seems that the company is intent on maximizing the success of the Switch. As enthusiasts eagerly await any news on a new console, Nintendo continues to reap the benefits of the Switch's widespread popularity and impressive sales numbers.
