Nintendo Players UK, the largest umbrella network for UK-based Nintendo fans, marks its 10-year anniversary with community meetups and inclusive gaming events.

Nintendo Players UK Celebrates a Decade of Gaming Community

For a decade now, Nintendo Players UK (NPUK) has been a cornerstone of the gaming community in the United Kingdom, providing a unique space for fans of Nintendo to come together and share their passion for video games. As they approach their ten-year anniversary this August, it is a time to reflect on the journey that has made NPUK the largest independent network of Nintendo gamers in the country.

Beginning around the launch of the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, the premise was simple: to encourage local gamers to connect and collect StreetPasses - a feature of the handheld console that allowed players to exchange game information when passing by each other. This local focus quickly evolved, and throughout 2012 to 2013, James Bowden embarked on the mission to create a more interconnected community, establishing StreetPass UK, which later expanded into what is now known as NPUK.

Jen Griffiths, a leading figure in the NPUK community and head of the administrative committee, explains that their guiding principle has always been to offer free, family-friendly events where Nintendo enthusiasts can meet and play together. The network consists of 29 regional groups, each with its distinct flavor and approach to organizing gaming meetups. While some gatherings are more casual and impromptu, the most engaged groups strive for monthly, and sometimes even weekly, events. Run by volunteers, their dedication and love for Nintendo and its community-centric vision are evident in each function they host.

NPUK events range from small local get-togethers to larger group celebrations. Signature titles such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Pokémon, and Splatoon frequently feature at these events, but there’s room for less mainstream titles as well. For example, games like Good Job! are played, showcasing the diverse taste within the community.

The Nintendo Switch has played an integral part in expanding the NPUK community by emphasizing local multiplayer, a feature that has brought more families and younger gamers into the fold. Interestingly, the NPUK also caters to devoted fans of the previous generation's 3DS console, offering a haven for those still seeking the joy of StreetPass connections.

Recent years have proven challenging for in-person gatherings due to the pandemic. However, it highlighted the irreplaceable value of face-to-face interactions, countering the outdated stereotype of gamers as isolated individuals. Now more than ever, gamers are seen as part of a vibrant, interconnected network, challenging previous assumptions and establishing new friendships. Being part of such groups can have profound effects, potentially providing a sense of belonging for those who may have felt isolated, as well as enhancing job prospects and CVs for event organizers.

As NPUK looks back on its achievements, including memorable events like the North vs. South Wales meetup in June 2015 and the establishment of a full committee in September 2020, they continue to encourage gamers to either join their local groups or start new ones.

With the tenth anniversary on the horizon, Jen hints at special plans to come but remains focused on the immediate future, including campaigns like Mental Health Awareness Week in mid-May. The message is clear: keep an eye open for exciting events, and consider joining or even creating a local Nintendo community.

Having created something special where fans of all ages can come together, play, and support one another, NPUK stands as a testament to the power of shared interests in building community and camaraderie. Whether a veteran or newcomer to Nintendo's ecosystem, this inclusive network awaits with open arms and a shared love for gaming.
