Seven months after the official closure of the Nintendo Network, the final player has disconnected from the Wii U and 3DS online services, marking the end of an era for these gaming consoles.

Nintendo Network Ceases as Last Player Logs Off

In April, when the Nintendo Network servers were shut down, it brought an end to online gaming and the digital shops for Wii U and 3DS consoles. This decision left many gamers nostalgic and a small group continued using the servers uninterrupted, maintaining a connection to the now-defunct network. Initially, four players were reported to still be active weeks after the shutdown. Over the months, these numbers dwindled, with the Wii U online community ceasing activity in July.

One persistent player, known on Twitter as @fishguy6564, continued his activity on the 3DS, playing Mario Kart 7. With no opponents left, fishguy6564’s gameplay transformed into solitary victory laps on the digital tracks of Mario Kart 7. This solitary persistence came to an end nearly seven months to the day after the network's closure, when a system crash on his 3DS caused @fishguy6564 to finally disconnect. Marking this occasion, he tweeted, “It’s over, Rest in peace, Nintendo Network,” signaling the final closure of a chapter in Nintendo’s online history.

This end of service has been closely monitored and reported by enthusiasts and communities who held on to their Wii U and 3DS consoles. Notable among them was a Twitter user @GaffsNotLaffs, co-founder of the 'Nintendo Network After Hours' Discord server. This group, among others, documented the dwindling online presence and the final days of the Nintendo Network.

The length of time some users stayed connected to the defunct network might seem surprising, but it also highlights the dedicated fan base Nintendo has cultivated over decades. For many, the network was not only about playing games but also connecting with a community that shared similar interests.

@fishguy6564 and his counterparts' dedication serves as a reminder of the impact gaming networks have in fostering a sense of connection and community among players. Even in its prolonged shutdown state, Nintendo's network brought players together, chatting, sharing, and playing until the very last possible moment.

Despite the network's closure, the Nintendo community remains vibrant, with discussions and sharing of memories on social platforms and forums. Fans continue to share anecdotes of their best moments on the Nintendo Network, including thrilling races, strategic battles, and the friendships forged through shared digital adventures.

Nintendo has since shifted its focus to the Nintendo Switch and its online capabilities, which continue to evolve and offer new services and games to delight and engage users. However, the fond memories of the Wii U and 3DS-era online adventures persist, cherished in the hearts of those who experienced them.

As the digital space on these older consoles fades into history, Nintendo fans both old and new look forward to creating new memories with current and future platforms. Nintendo's ability to innovate and connect players worldwide remains uncontested, promising more exciting features and community-driven content in years to come.
