Discover all the details surrounding the closure of Nintendo's 3DS and Wii U online services, including dates, affected games, and future options.

Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop Closure Guide

As the sun sets on two of Nintendo's beloved gaming consoles—the 3DS and Wii U—players around the world are gearing up for the final phase of the devices' lifecycle. With the online play feature set to shut down on April 8, 2024, fans are preparing to bid farewell to the internet-connected abilities of these consoles. It's the end of an era, and there’s a wave of nostalgia mingling with the need to get one's affairs in order before the virtual doors close for good.

Inevitably, every digital service reaches a point where it becomes less utilized by consumers, leading companies to retire them—an aspect of the natural product lifecycle Nintendo has referred to in discussions about the closures. In March 2023, the Wii U and 3DS eShops said their goodbyes, removing the ability to buy new digital games, although existing downloads and updates remain available for a while longer.

One of the most pressing questions on players' minds is: which models will this affect? Put simply, all of them. Every version of the 3DS and Wii U, from the New 3DS XL to the Wii U Basic, will no longer offer online gameplay or any other online functionality once the switch-off occurs.

When it comes to the games affected, the list includes the platforms' most popular online titles, with franchises like Mario Kart, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing no longer being playable online. However, there’s a silver lining for those who love their games but aren't fussed about online features; the offline capabilities of these games will remain untouched.

Discussing the finer points of service endings, there is a difference in the fate of the 3DS features StreetPass and SpotPass. StreetPass will continue working since it relies on local communication, but SpotPass involves online connectivity and will, therefore, be discontinued.

Players with digital games on their consoles may be wondering what will happen to their library. Thankfully, the ability to redownload games previously purchased and to download software updates for such games is expected to be available "for the foreseeable future." However, this scenario is not indefinite, and the exact duration remains uncertain.

For the free-to-start software titles on these platforms, including Nintendo Badge Arcade, new downloads are no longer available, and other features will cease to exist alongside the end of online services. And while you can still purchase eShop cards, adding funds through credit cards ended back in May 2022, and redeeming eShop cards stopped in August the same year.

A key takeaway for Nintendo users is that system transfers for the 3DS will still be possible following the online shutdown. This means that users can continue to migrate their data between 3DS systems even after the deadline has passed.

While it’s a nostalgic time for gamers as they reminisce about their favorite online moments, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on their digital purchases and prepare for the future. Many of the soon-to-be-discontinued games and features are already available on Nintendo's current console, the Switch, through the Nintendo Switch Online service, which offers a library of classic titles from various legacy systems, some of which have been enhanced with new features like online play.

The closing of the eShop also highlights broader questions about digital preservation and consumers' relationship with technology. Nintendo's message is that it encourages the play of classic content through modern services that reach a broader audience. While the desire to hold onto the past is strong, the inevitability of change is stronger, pushing companies and fans alike toward new platforms and services.

As the dust settles on the eShop closure, players are advised to make the most of the remaining time with their beloved online titles and to make any final preparations for the next chapter in Nintendo’s digital story.
