Director Henry Selick discusses a potential prequel to 'Nightmare Before Christmas' as the film marks its 30th anniversary.

Prequel of 'Nightmare Before Christmas' Might Happen

The cherished animated film 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' reaches its three-decade milestone, stirring conversations about its future among the director and lead actor, Henry Selick and Chris Sarandon. During a dialogue with People magazine, both imparted some exciting insights into what's on the horizon for the film. Selick and Sarandon, along with Tim Burton and the rest of the team, surprisingly unveiled the unlikelihood of a sequel coming into play, but a prequel could very well be in the offing.

Delving deeper into the subject, Selick mentioned that Burton would be cautious about tarnishing the repute of the original film by creating a sequel. Burton's list of successful ventures means he is not financially reliant on a 'Nightmare Before Christmas' sequel, nor has there been a compelling idea presented for a second film. For Selick, it remains clear that the ultimate decision remains in Burton's hands.

However, the possibilities aren't entirely exhausted yet. Selick amusingly stated that a prequel might fetch intriguing revelations, especially tracing the journey of how Jack became the 'King of Halloween Town'. Fans and followers of the original film would certainly be thrilled to pry into the backstory.

Interestingly, the initial film begins with Skellington merrily roving through the streets, relishing the applause after another accomplished Halloween night. The townsfolk adore him, Oogie Boogie being the sole exception. The pathway to fame for Jack, however, remains undisclosed in the original, and a prequel boasting the shaping narrative of Jack could be a captivating spectacle.

Sarandon looks to be ready to take up Jack's character again. Voicing his enthusiasm to People, he declared his readiness to take the plunge if there were to be another chapter in the 'Nightmare Before Christmas' series.

Despite Burton maintaining his lack of interest in a sequel, his track record includes instances where he has overturned his own decision. Earlier this year, an announcement revealed Burton collaborating with original members of the 'Beetlejuice' cast to produce 'Beetlejuice 2', a whole quarter-century after the original film's release. Speculations rise with this news, which could keep our anticipation for another 'Nightmare Before Christmas' installment alive.
