Acclaimed director Taika Waititi, known for Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, has declared he won't be returning for Thor 5, citing numerous other film obligations.

Taika Waititi Confirms He Won't Direct Thor 5

Taika Waititi, the esteemed director of highly successful Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 and Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022, recently revealed that he will not involve himself with the anticipated Thor 5. This came to light in a conversation with Business Insider where he clarified, "I know that I won’t be involved". Instead, he will concentrate on several other film projects that he has committed to.

Waititi's directorial prowess was manifest in Thor: Ragnarok, which grossed a staggering $865 million against a $180 million budget. Moreover, his works extended beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), resulting in critically acclaimed movies like Jojo Rabbit. This particular film, which he wrote and directed in 2019, won him the prestigious Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In 2022, Waititi returned to the MCU franchise with Thor: Love and Thunder. Stepping up the game, this became the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year and introduced former Batman star Christian Bale to the MCU. His portfolio is diverse and filled with many impressive projects. Notably, in 2020, he signed on to write, direct, and produce an animated adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Netflix.

At present, the versatile director has taken the task of scripting a Star Wars movie. Once this is complete, he is set to direct a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga Akira.

Consequently, Waititi's ongoing and future workload is extensive, extending for "six, seven years". Considering this timeline, another Thor movie would likely arrive sooner. Despite stepping back from Thor 5, Waititi reflects positively on his experiences with Marvel and Chris Hemsworth, the star of Thor.

Commenting on his relationship with Marvel, Waititi added, "I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We're in an open relationship, and it's like if they want to see other people, I'm happy for that. I'd still get back into bed with them one day."

While the MCU may have lost his directorial skills for the time being, audiences won’t have to wait long for Waititi's next creation. His forthcoming film, Next Goal Wins, is all set to hit theaters on November 17. Fans of the director and cinema patrons alike eagerly await the exciting array of movies set for 2023 and beyond.
