Light No Fire has made a rare return to the spotlight, albeit through the latest evolution of No Man's Sky. Hello Games has released the Cosmos update for its long-running space exploration game on September 9, and studio founder Sean Murray has indicated that the update is more than a major expansion for existing players. Its newly tested technology, systems and infrastructure may eventually find a home in the studio's ambitious fantasy survival project.

That does not amount to a full reveal of Light No Fire's current state, nor does it establish exactly which Cosmos features will be carried over. However, Murray's comments offer one of the clearest indications yet that the two games share a technical path. As Cosmos adds customizable space stations, enormous social alliances and new encounters in space, Hello Games is using No Man's Sky as a place to develop and refine ideas that could be particularly significant for a game built around one immense, shared planet.

Cosmos is a testing ground for Light No Fire

Near the end of the Cosmos update video, Murray explained that the technology introduced through the update can be tested and refined now, with the hope that players will experience it later in Light No Fire. The statement continues a long-established approach at Hello Games: No Man's Sky is not simply receiving years of support in isolation, but is also helping the team explore systems that may be useful in its next project.

Light No Fire was announced as a large-scale open-world survival game with a fantasy setting. Rather than sending players through No Man's Sky's near-endless procedural universe, it is centered on a single planet said to be Earth-sized. That difference is important. No Man's Sky has always been designed around travel between countless worlds, while Light No Fire appears intended to make one world feel vast, explorable and socially meaningful over a much longer period.

Cosmos may provide clues to how Hello Games intends to support that goal. The update brings significant changes to space, including custom space stations and resource-filled "space hulks." More notably for Light No Fire, it introduces alliances capable of housing thousands of allied players and stations across the galaxy. Murray described the work as enabling communities on a scale the studio had not previously expected to tackle.

The phrasing leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Massive alliances could mean more ambitious communities

The biggest unanswered question is what an alliance would look like outside No Man's Sky. In Cosmos, the idea is tied to players and stations distributed across the stars. That makes sense for a game where groups may be separated by enormous distances and countless solar systems. Light No Fire's setting creates a very different challenge: everyone may be operating across the same planet, competing for territory, traveling routes, resources and points of interest within one interconnected environment.

As a result, the technical foundations behind Cosmos could matter more than its exact surface-level design. A large alliance system could potentially support settlements, regional communities, trading networks or cooperative expeditions in Light No Fire. It might also allow organized groups to establish a lasting identity within the world. Those are possibilities rather than confirmed features, but they illustrate why the Cosmos update deserves attention from players watching Hello Games' next game.

Scale alone is not necessarily the key. Large groups need reasons to cooperate, places to gather and tools to coordinate. In No Man's Sky, claiming and managing space stations offers an obvious group objective. Light No Fire may need equivalents shaped by its fantasy world, whether those involve settlements, dangerous wilderness, unusual landmarks or shared construction. Hello Games has not clarified how the game's multiplayer systems will function, so it remains too early to assume guild-like mechanics, territorial control or player-driven economies.

Even so, Murray's emphasis on "real communities working together" suggests that community-scale play is part of the studio's broader ambition. If the technology is successfully adapted, Light No Fire could be built to accommodate much bigger social structures than a typical small co-op survival game.

A single planet changes the design equation

Light No Fire's Earth-sized world is among its most striking promises. It also creates design questions that No Man's Sky does not have to answer in the same way. In a universe of procedurally generated planets, players can always push outward. On a single world, memorable locations and natural routes may become important shared geography. A mountain, forest, coast or city-sized settlement could turn into a familiar landmark for an entire community rather than another stop in an endless sequence of worlds.

That means points of interest may need to evolve differently. In No Man's Sky, discovery often revolves around new planets, resources, structures and systems. Light No Fire will likely need to make repeated travel through the same world feel worthwhile while allowing player groups to make their own marks upon it. The studio has not yet explained its solution, but the alliance work in Cosmos suggests it is developing systems that can make collective activity a larger part of the experience.

The limited setting could also make encounters between players more meaningful. A vast planet is still enormous, but it is finite in a way No Man's Sky's universe is not. Communities may develop around regions, trade paths, resources or especially dramatic destinations. The question is whether Light No Fire will encourage such encounters organically, organize them through formal social tools, or do both.

Fantasy footage offers a reminder of the game's identity

While Murray discussed the shared technology, older Light No Fire footage appeared in the background. It featured a gathering of humanoid rabbit warriors, a brief glimpse of dragon riding and an ogre with a distinctly puzzled expression. None of that footage delivers new mechanical confirmation, but it is an effective reminder that Light No Fire is not merely No Man's Sky transferred into a medieval setting.

Its fantasy imagery has always been central to its appeal. The project combines the promise of open-ended exploration and survival with a world populated by unusual creatures, player characters and mounts. Dragon travel in particular implies a different relationship with distance than the starships of No Man's Sky. Flying over a shared planet on a creature, rather than jumping between systems, could make terrain and landmarks much more important to how players understand the world.

The new hints from Cosmos therefore point toward shared engineering rather than identical game design. Custom stations may not become custom castles. Alliances may not work the same way on a planet as they do across a galaxy. But server, networking, community and rendering advances can be adapted to suit an entirely different setting.

Visual technology may carry across as well

Murray also highlighted new volumetric lighting technology in the Cosmos update presentation. Of the potential connections to Light No Fire, this is one of the easier ones to imagine. Volumetric lighting can help give depth and atmosphere to fog, sunlight, interiors, weather and other environmental effects. A fantasy survival world filled with forests, caves, mountains, open skies and fire-breathing dragons would be an obvious place to use more advanced lighting tools.

Hello Games has not formally confirmed that this specific visual feature will be used in Light No Fire. Nevertheless, Murray's broader comments about testing and refining technology make it a reasonable possibility. The studio's history with No Man's Sky shows how its technology has changed substantially through ongoing updates, from major visual overhauls to expanded multiplayer features and construction systems.

For Light No Fire, lighting improvements could matter not only for presentation but also for mood. A planet-scale survival game needs landscapes that remain compelling after many hours of travel. Changes in time of day, weather, visibility and environmental ambience may help regions feel distinct, especially if players are expected to return repeatedly to the same places.

Patience remains necessary

Despite these hints, much about Light No Fire remains unknown. There is still no new release date, no detailed explanation of its multiplayer structure and no confirmation of which Cosmos systems will appear in the final game. The available information supports the idea that Hello Games is investing in technology with both No Man's Sky and Light No Fire in mind, but it does not turn speculation into a feature list.

The size of the Light No Fire team also underlines why updates have been measured. Murray has recently said that between 12 and 20 people are working on the project at any given time. That is a comparatively small team for a game with ambitions involving an Earth-sized fantasy world and potentially enormous player communities. At the same time, No Man's Sky's continuing development gives Hello Games a practical environment in which to iterate on complex systems before committing them to the new game.

Light No Fire is already highly visible among Steam wishlists, even with limited marketing and infrequent public appearances. The Cosmos update does not answer all of the major questions surrounding it, but it gives fans a useful reason to watch No Man's Sky's evolution closely. For now, the clearest message is that Hello Games sees the two projects as connected by more than philosophy: the studio is actively using one to test possibilities for the other.
