When LEGO announced LEGO Horizon Adventures for the PlayStation 5, fans were intrigued by how the serious sci-fi world of Horizon Zero Dawn would translate into the playful and universally recognized format of LEGO. The game is aimed at a younger audience and prioritizes accessibility and humor over the depth and complexity of the original game.
LEGO Horizon Adventures takes us through a condensed version of Aloy's journey but with a whimsical twist. Fundamental elements of the original game's narrative are minimized or turned into comedic aspects, providing a fresh take that both amuses and confounds. The decision to utilize LEGO not only visually transforms the world into a vibrant, plastic wonderland but also shifts the tone to light-hearted and fun.
Visually, the game is stunning. Developers Studio Gobo and Guerrilla Games faithfully recreated the Horizon environment using LEGO blocks for everything from explosive effects to distant landscapes. The effort put into maintaining the LEGO aesthetic is commendable, combining realistically rendered materials with techniques like tilt-shift photography to produce a beautifully miniature world. Performance mode has occasional hiccups with animation smoothness, but these moments are sparse.
The central hub of the game, Mother's Heart, functions as a base for players to return to after each mission. Here, players can upgrade characters, outfit them with various playful costumes, and decorate the village with LEGO constructs. The area grows as you progress, unlocking new customization options and features, including a job board that addresses both in-hub activities and level-specific challenges, encapsulating a substantial progression system.
However, the game's stages do not live up to the interactive and expansive hub. Each level is straightforward, often too linear, with minimal challenge in terms of platforming or exploration. They consist primarily of simple tasks like jumping and climbing, and occasionally interacting with basic puzzles. Although visually appealing, the stages lack depth and do not significantly evolve in complexity as the game progresses. The minimal side quests and treasure chests, while rewarding, become less enticing as the game floods players with studs, diminishing the incentive to explore off the beaten path.
Combat is where LEGO Horizon Adventures somewhat redeems itself. As expected in a franchise known for strategic mechanical battles, fighting against robotic creatures offers a range of tactical options. The simplified combat system maintains elements like targeting weak points, though pared down for an easier grasp by younger players. The game introduces a variety of quirky weapons and gadgets that add flavor and strategy, catering to a more engaging and dynamic gameplay experience during these encounters. The characters—Aloy, Varl, Teersa, and Erend—each bring unique weapons and abilities to the battlefield, enhancing replay value and player choice despite the limited character roster compared to other LEGO titles.
The main downside to the level design is the lack of replayability. Once a stage is completed, it cannot be revisited unless the player starts a new save file, limiting the ability to relive favorite moments or improve on past performances. This choice is peculiar for a game designed with younger players in mind, who often enjoy repeating content. However, the game does eventually unlock Apex Hunts and a Free Mode post-completion, allowing for more freestyle exploration and combat in randomly assembled environments, but only after the initial run-through of the story.
LEGO Horizon Adventures serves as a charming introduction for younger audiences to the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, using the creative and accessible format of LEGO to bridge the gap between complex original gameplay and a more straightforward, fun-focused experience. While it successfully captures the essence of fun and engagement typical of LEGO adaptations, it falls short in delivering the depth and dynamic gameplay that both children and seasoned players might expect from such a beloved franchise.
