LEGO has expanded its series of Animal Crossing sets with the introduction of the K.K.'s Concert at the Plaza set, alongside the new Dodo Airlines terminal. This addition is particularly notable for featuring K.K. Slider, one of Animal Crossing’s most cherished characters, in LEGO form for the first time. Priced as the more expensive option in the current lineup, this set comprises various elements that aim to recreate a familiar scene from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game.
Contained within the LEGO set are six bags of bricks that piece together into a charming representation of the game's town plaza. The set includes a cafe, K.K. Slider with his RV, and the town hall facade complete with a clock, a noticeboard, and a flagpole. It also features minifigures of K.K. Slider, Audie, and a new version of Isabelle in a pink hoodie.
Starting with the cafe, LEGO has chosen to capture the quaint atmosphere of Animal Crossing's in-game coffee spot. Although simple, the cafe build introduces vibrant yellow and green color schemes and incorporates little details like cupcakes and a tea set. An exclusive autumnal orange tree adds a unique signature to the set.
However, the minifigure of K.K. Slider might leave fans wanting more. While the accurate head mould and guitar enrich his character, the lack of detailed printing on the body and static tail could be a downside. Adjacent to K.K. Slider's figure is his camper van, adorned with printed musical notes and equipped with a functional roof box for storage. Inside, the van's playful interior allows for K.K. to "drive" while lying in bed, staying true to his laid-back persona.
The town hall section of the set mimics the architectural style seen in the game but with a scaled-down, simplistic design that might not impress seasoned LEGO builders. However, playful elements like speakers and a tape deck with a turnable dial make up for its straightforward build. Also included is a pole with interchangeable flags, allowing owners to customize their set similarly to the game.
Despite the appealing visuals and the inclusion of favorite characters, the set's price may be a sticking point. The K.K.'s Concert at the Plaza set retails for $79.99, which is significant, especially when considering it only contains slightly more pieces than other less expensive sets in the series. It poses a question for buyers about value, particularly when the straightforward nature of the builds and the simpler designs are taken into account.
What redeems the set, however, are the elements of playability and nostalgia. The set is clearly designed with younger fans in mind, evident in the joy and engagement it brings during play. The camper van and the interactive features of the town hall are likely to provide hours of imaginative play, capturing the essence of exploration and creativity celebrated in the Animal Crossing game series. Additionally, for collectors, the exclusive minifigures and unique printed pieces do add collector's value.
While K.K.'s Concert at the Plaza set may not offer the best value per piece, its charm is undeniable. It successfully brings a slice of the Animal Crossing world into physical form, which can be particularly delightful for fans of the series. The decision to purchase may come down to how much one values the novelty and the playful spirit of the set against its price. But certainly, for children and fans of the game, this set promises to deliver fun and engaging experiences that mirror the joy found in the digital version of Animal Crossing.
