Ember Lab’s Kena: Bridge of Spirits, initially a PlayStation exclusive, makes its debut on Xbox platforms, featuring enhanced content and visuals.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits Launches on Xbox

Ember Lab's acclaimed indie game, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, previously exclusive to PlayStation consoles, has now made its way onto Xbox platforms. This transition offers Xbox players the chance to experience a game that has garnered much attention for its enchanting visuals, compelling narrative, and engaging gameplay mechanics. The upcoming Xbox release is slated for August 15, and it promises to introduce additional content and enhancements that build on the original version.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits represents Ember Lab's first foray into gaming, having previously been an animation studio. The game features a young Spirit Guide named Kena, who embarks on a mystical quest to uncover the secrets of a forgotten village and reach the enigmatic Sacred Mountain Shrine. Throughout her journey, Kena assists spirits entangled by their unresolved pasts, employing her spiritual powers and the help of tiny yet potent spirit companions known as the Rot.

The gameplay of Kena: Bridge of Spirits beautifully integrates various elements such as exploration, puzzle-solving, and swift combat. Set in a richly detailed world that blends Eastern and Western thematic elements, the game has received accolades for its storytelling, winning the “Best Indie Game” title at the Game Awards.

Ember Lab has infused the Xbox version of Kena with notable improvements and additional content. This includes a New Game+ mode, a range of cosmetic options for Kena, and engaging Spirit Guide Trials. Given the passionate fan base that has eagerly awaited its Xbox release, the studio is enthusiastic about delivering the full, expanded Kena experience to a new audience.

One of the unique features of Kena: Bridge of Spirits is the Rot, Kena's spirit companions. These creatures are pivotal to both the story and gameplay. Players can discover up to 100 Rot scattered throughout the environment, each adding to Kena’s abilities in combat and exploration. These companions can transform into various forms and perform powerful attacks, becoming increasingly potent as players cultivate a larger team.

Ember Lab ensured that the Xbox release would offer optimal performance by leveraging Unreal Engine 4, which facilitated the porting process. The game runs at 60 FPS in 4K on Xbox Series X and 30 FPS in 4K on Xbox Series S, ensuring high-quality visuals and smooth gameplay. Although the team was new to developing for Xbox, they focused diligently on enhancing the game’s art style and technical performance to provide an excellent experience for Xbox players.

Despite its success on other platforms, including a stint on PlayStation Plus, Ember Lab has no current plans to include Kena: Bridge of Spirits on Xbox Game Pass. The team believes that the game’s unique appeal and the additional content available on Xbox will attract players looking for a deep, story-driven adventure game.

Reflecting on the game, the developers express great pride, particularly in how Kena resonates emotionally with players. Many have appreciated the game’s depth and the meaningful ways it explores themes of grief and healing. The engaging combat system, which requires players to confront and soothe troubled spirits’ pain, provides an unexpectedly challenging but rewarding experience that complements the game's enchanting world.

As Kena: Bridge of Spirits prepares for its Xbox debut, Ember Lab looks forward to sharing their creation with an even broader audience. They believe the passion and dedication that went into developing the game shine through in every element, providing Xbox players with a memorable gaming experience that explores the poignant interaction between pain and healing in a visually stunning world.
