Bookoff and Geo, Japanese second-hand retailers, launch their own 'Famiclones' to meet the soaring demand for retro gaming, with notable sales growth and swift product sell-outs.


Japanese Stores Manufacture Famiclones for Retro Game Demand

The resurgent popularity of retro video games has sparked an innovative response from Japanese second-hand retailers. Stores such as Bookoff and Geo, known for their trade in pre-owned items like CDs, DVDs, and video games, have now entered the console market by manufacturing their own versions of the beloved Famicom, targeting fans of classic gaming.

Geo, last August, introduced the Famicom-compatible "Retro Game Computer" console, priced at an affordable ¥2,178, which is approximately $14.50. This savvy move proved to be a success as they managed to sell through their initial batch of 3,000 units by October. Owing to the positive response, Geo aims to continue production of this device as a regular item in their inventory.

Not to be outdone, competitor Bookoff released its 8Bit Compact V2 console in December, targeting a similar demographic with a slightly higher price tag of ¥3,980 (around $27). Bookoff reported a nearly 60% increase in the sale of retro games, including Famicom and Super Famicom titles, in the year 2023. This surge, they noted, was partly fueled by nostalgia amongst the domestic population and fascination from foreign tourists visiting Japan.

Moreover, Suruga-ya, another player in the Japanese resell market, has observed a doubling of sales at some of their outlets. They attribute this growth to a heightened interest from younger generations and international visitors, both of whom are eager to experience or recapture the essence of vintage video gaming.

The phenomenon of "Famiclones", or replicas of the original Famicom consoles, is not a new concept. These have been in circulation since the 1980s, but what sets the current trend apart is the direct involvement of retail stores in producing these devices. It's a significant indication of how mainstream and lucrative the retro gaming segment has become, as retailers are not just selling pre-owned games but also providing the means to play them via new, yet nostalgically designed, hardware.

The creation and sale of these Famiclones by retailers serve a dual purpose.
