As another eventful year in gaming passes, we get to reflect on the experiences that left an indelible mark on our digital adventures. Jaimie Ditchfield, a seasoned game reviewer, shares his personal list of the top five games for PS5 and PS4 that defined his gaming journey in 2023.
Starting off at number five is the highly immersive and ambitious fantasy role-playing game Baldur's Gate 3. Although Jaimie hasn’t concluded his adventure—35 hours deep into the game—he’s been captivated by how authentically it captures the essence of Dungeons & Dragons. The game demonstrates the depth of its role-playing mechanics, creating an experience that feels like a living, breathing world within a fantastical setting. This magical creation by Larian Studios might be lower on Jaimie's list, but it holds a special place due to its ambition and grandeur.
Taking the fourth spot on the list is Marvel's Spider-Man 2. For Jaimie, Spider-Man is not just a character but an ever-present influence throughout his life since childhood. This sequel by Insomniac Games expands on the solid foundation laid out by its predecessor, refining the experience with improved traversal mechanics, such as the wingsuit, and fluid combat system enhanced by symbiote powers. But it's the emotional moments in the story, alongside the introduction of Jaimie's favorite villain, Venom, which solidifies its position. The game resonates with Jaimie on a personal level, weaving deep character narratives within the exhilarating action.
Resident Evil 4's remake claims the third spot, an iconic title that Jaimie holds in high esteem. The original 2005 game is a treasured classic, and the 2023 remake had big shoes to fill. It has successfully managed to blend the action-packed gameplay reminiscent of the original with the modernized horror elements seen in Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake. Jaimie appreciates the effort to balance tradition with innovation, and the streamlining of the story for better pacing and character development, ensuring classic moments were preserved, much to his delight.
In the runner-up position is Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. The excitement for this installment was instinctual for Jaimie, a staunch fan of the franchise. However, it was the unexpected depth of emotion in the continuation of Kazuma Kiryu’s story that truly endeared the game to Jaimie. After his story seemingly concluded in Yakuza 6, his return was initially puzzling. But as the story unfolded, along with the traditional treasure trove of minigames and side activities, Jaimie found himself captivated, elevating Gaiden as one of his series favorites.
Taking the crown at number one is the peculiar and mesmerizing Alan Wake 2. Remedy’s latest creation offers some of the most compelling gameplay sequences Jaimie has experienced, coupled with an excellent soundtrack and a pioneering integration of live-action elements. The journey through Bright Falls and the Dark Place was nothing short of awe-inspiring, packed with mind-blowing moments. The game's ambitious narrative and unique style have left a lasting impression on Jaimie, making Alan Wake 2 an unforgettable experience and his top pick for the year.
Jaimie’s selection of games showcases a diverse tapestry of genres and storytelling methods, ranging from the fantastical realms of Baldur's Gate 3 to the gritty streets of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the chilling corridors of Resident Evil 4, to the dramatic narrative of Like a Dragon Gaiden and the surreal experience of Alan Wake 2. It's this diversity that highlights the beauty of gaming as a medium, offering unique experiences for every gamer out there. Whether you’re looking for a deep and complex RPG, a heart-racing action-adventure, or a narrative-driven odyssey, Jaimie's top picks are a testament to the ever-evolving art of video games.
