Annual survey reveals detailed gaming trends among Nintendo Switch users, including habits, hardware preferences, and expectations for Switch's successor.

Insights from the 2024 Nintendo Switch Summer Survey

A few months ago, Nintendo Life embarked on a comprehensive survey to gauge the sentiments of Nintendo enthusiasts as the Switch console progresses through its eighth year. The survey, which included 70 questions, captured diverse facets ranging from eShop experiences to hardware issues like Joy-Con drift, as well as gamers' previous interactions with Nintendo products and their outlook on future offerings.

With summer at an end, the analysis of responses from roughly 6,000 to 10,000 participants is now available, giving us a glimpse into the gaming preferences and behaviors of the community.

The survey begins with a snapshot of the respondents: approximately 50% are from the US, and 20% hail from the UK, leaving 30% spread across other regions. About 52% of these gamers have children in their household, with 25% playing cooperative games on the Switch—a testament to its family-friendly appeal.

In terms of gaming habits, 33% of participants play up to five hours per week, while a slightly larger number spend between six and ten hours. Popular genres among the respondents include Action, Adventure, Platformers, and RPGs, with a significant 61% preferring single-player experiences. Notably, 'Breath of the Wild', 'Animal Crossing', and 'Tears of the Kingdom' were the top three most-played games.

Diving into the console specifics, 56% owned the standard Switch model, 16% had the Switch Lite, and 27% enjoyed the newer OLED version. Despite the varied console preferences, a common issue was storage as most users had micro SD cards of only 128GB or 256GB, hinting at a potential need for greater storage solutions like 1TB cards in the future.

The eShop experience was reported as just 'adequate' by the majority and 'poor' by others, signaling room for improvement in navigation and user interface. However, the Nintendo Switch Online subscription is viewed positively, offering good value according to a plurality of the survey takers, even though 20% do not subscribe.

Hardware reliability surfaced as a significant concern: 53% experienced Joy-Con drift, and 16% had issues with Joy-Con rail loosening. Despite these issues, the Pro Controller was the preferred choice for 64% of gamers, who favored its robustness over the Joy-Con.

On the topic of usage, 55% primarily played their Switch in docked mode, and 44% preferred handheld. This flexibility in gaming style is one of Switch’s most lauded features, capturing the essence of Nintendo’s innovation in the console market.

Looking ahead, the community's anticipation for a "Switch 2" is palpable. Better performance, whether docked or handheld, was the most sought-after improvement, along with the desire for high-quality ports of multi-platform games. There's also a significant interest in seeing the return of features like StreetPass and the integration of a new, unique feature that could redefine the gaming experience.

The findings also highlighted an intriguing cultural snippet: a minuscule 0.6% of respondents have ever taken their Switch to a rooftop party—a quirky stat that challenges the popular, yet apparently mythical, image of urban Switch gaming.

In terms of community engagement, Nintendo Life remains a crucial source of information for 54% of respondents, emphasizing the site’s pivotal role in shaping purchasing decisions and gaming preferences through reviews and features.

As we move closer to the next generation of Nintendo consoles, the survey offers valuable insights into the needs and wishes of the gaming community, paving the way for enhancements that could define the future of handheld and home console gaming. The ongoing dialogue between gamers and developers shines through in such surveys, promising a responsive and evolved gaming experience in the years to come.
