This Friday marks a significant moment for fans of action-figure-shooter games as Hypercharge Unboxed makes its debut on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Ahead of its launch, Joe Henson, Creative Gameplay & Marketing Director at Digital Cybercherries, shared an in-depth look at the game’s development journey and what players can expect.
Joe Henson, who plays multiple roles in the small indie team of six at Digital Cybercherries, shared that Hypercharge Unboxed is a simple yet profoundly nostalgic game. It combines elements of first and third-person shooter mechanics where players battle against waves of weaponized toys. Henson emphasized that the game is designed to evoke the golden age of action shooters, focusing on straightforward gameplay mechanics like jumping and shooting, making it accessible for gamers at all levels.
Henson also highlighted that the game is a perfect way for adults to relive and share the cherished moments of their childhood playtimes with their children, making it a unique family bonding experience through gaming. The game supports full split-screen capabilities, enhancing its appeal as a communal gaming experience.
The inspiration behind Hypermarket Unboxed stems from various childhood movies and games, including classics like Toy Story and Small Soldiers. The idea to develop a game centered around action figures materialized during a team brainstorming session in Edinburgh in 2015, where a nostalgic film viewing led to the crystallization of the game’s concept.
Since its initial release on Nintendo Switch and PC, Hypercharge Unboxed has evolved significantly, incorporating feedback from its community. This input led to major content updates, including the introduction of new gameplay features like a third-person camera and player bots, which were a considerable technical challenge.
Henson detailed the versatile gameplay modes available in Hypercharge Unboxed, ranging from a wave-based story campaign playable solo or in co-op (both online and offline) to various PvP modes and even local party modes. These offer players multiple ways to engage with the game, whether they prefer competitive play, cooperative challenges, or simply exploring the game's world.
The recent development of bringing the game to Xbox has been both thrilling and challenging. The advanced hardware of the Xbox Series X and Series S enabled the team to enhance the game’s visual and performance capabilities drastically. The journey involved substantial learning and adaptation to leverage the new consoles' potential fully, ensuring that the game would deliver a smooth, visually pleasing experience across all Xbox platforms.
As for the technical specifications, Henson noted that Hypercharge Unboxed aims to run at dynamic 2160p (4K) on the Xbox Series X and approximately 1728p on the Series S, with goals to maintain 60 frames per second across all platforms to ensure a fluid gameplay experience.
The decision to launch Hypercharge Unboxed on Xbox was driven by the team’s personal connection to the console, which many members grew up playing, as well as the influence of iconic games like Halo on the game’s development. The supportive response from the Xbox team and community has greatly encouraged the developers, reinforcing their enthusiasm throughout the game’s adaptation process for Xbox.
As the launch date approaches, Henson expressed gratitude towards the Xbox community for their support and excitement. He hopes that Hypercharge Unboxed will not only meet player expectations but also bring them a delightful wave of nostalgia and joy.
Finally, the game’s adaptation for the Xbox underlines the passion and dedication of small indie teams like Digital Cybercherries in bringing engaging, nostalgic experiences to a wider audience, proving that even the simplest game concepts can resonate deeply and create meaningful gaming experiences. Hypercharge Unboxed is set to launch on May 31, 2024, and is currently available for pre-order on the Xbox Store.
