Horizon Zero Dawn, developed by the Dutch studio Guerrilla, originally captivated players with its expansive open-world and engaging RPG elements. The game's shift from Guerrilla’s familiar FPS terrain to a richly detailed RPG format proved a successful evolution, attracting a vast player base. The release of its sequel and other franchise extensions further established its strong market presence. Amid this success, the announcement of a PS5 remaster, managed by Nixxes, initially raised eyebrows given its seemingly redundant nature. However, the modest $10 upgrade fee and the option to transfer save files from the PS4 version have effectively turned tides in its favor.
The most notable upgrades in the remastered version are seen in its visual presentation. While the core gameplay remains identical, ensuring that players will revisit the protagonist Aloy’s journey through a lush post-apocalyptic world teeming with mechanical beasts, the graphical enhancements are profound. The vividness of the tropical biomes Aloy explores, and the intricate detailing of the mechanical dinosaurs she encounters, are now more visually aligned with the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. This creates a seamless visual bridge between the two games, a feature Sony pursued similarly with the The Last of Us titles.
The storyline, sprawling across two distinct timelines, still resonates with its original allure. It deftly weaves the contemporary political struggles with the mysterious cataclysmic events that define the game’s setting. Though some narrative elements are delivered through audio logs and happen off-screen—a method that might dilute the impact of major revelations—the storyline is packed with enough twists to keep the intrigue alive.
On the gameplay frontier, since this was Guerrilla’s initial RPG venture, the side quests in Horizon Zero Dawn are not as robust compared to those in Forbidden West, but they receive a noticeable improvement in the included Frozen Wilds expansion. Nixxes has gone the extra mile by re-recording over 10 hours of motion capture and revising some key cutscenes to enrich the storytelling, making the dialogues and interactions smoother and more lifelike.
Graphically, the remaster is nothing short of stunning. Every element, from the lush foliage to the detailed character animations, has been meticulously overhauled. The environment reacts more realistically to Aloy's movements, enhancing immersion. Guerrilla’s improvements in technology, such as the integration of the Anubis Cloud Engine for denser, more atmospheric skyboxes and the complete overhaul of water dynamics, reflect a dedicated effort to harness the PS5’s advanced capabilities.
Performance-wise, the game offers a solid 60fps experience, with a promise of further enhancement upon the release of the PS5 Pro. Although the remaster includes an option for native 4K at 30fps, the visual fidelity in Performance Mode is so impressive that the higher frame rate option is preferable for the best gameplay experience.
Audio improvements are equally remarkable. The remastered version utilizes the PS5’s 3D audio capabilities to deliver a soundscape that is as audibly rich as the game's visuals are stunning. The subtle nuances of the environment, combined with the thematic sounds of mechanical creatures and human activity, create a compelling auditory experience. The integration of DualSense features, like adaptive triggers for Aloy’s bow-and-arrow, enhances the tactile feedback, further immersing players in the action.
While the remaster excels in many aspects, one slight drawback is the lack of trophy transfer between the PS4 and the PS5 versions. Players looking to continue their journey and complete remaining achievements will find this limitation frustrating as it requires re-earning trophies already unlocked on the PS4 version. Despite this hiccup, the overall execution of the remaster is thoughtfully done, making it more than just a superficial upgrade.
With these enhancements, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered not only revitalizes the original game but also elevates it, presenting a compelling case for both newcomers and returning fans to experience Aloy’s adventure with renewed vigor and visual splendor.
