Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to bring an enormous animal population to its fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar has confirmed that the game contains 170 species, a total spanning 60 kinds of birds, more than 30 land mammals, and numerous fish and reptiles. It is a striking number for a series primarily known for criminal escapades, dense cities, satire, and vehicle mayhem--but it also fits a setting inspired by Florida's remarkably varied habitats.

That scale means the wildlife will not simply be background scenery scattered around a few rural roads. Leonida is designed around urban areas, countryside, inland waterways, coastal regions, swamps, Everglades-like wetlands, and ocean environments. The animals identified in Rockstar's promotional material and preview information already show how wide that environmental range will be, from domestic dogs on city streets to dolphins offshore and alligators in the wetlands.

Only around 50 species have been visibly identified or explicitly confirmed so far, leaving well over 100 still to be revealed. Rockstar is evidently holding back a substantial portion of the final wildlife roster, so players should be careful about treating community speculation, old leaks, or animals from earlier Rockstar games as confirmation. For now, the following list focuses on creatures that have appeared in trailers, the Extended Look, official screenshots, or preview coverage of a near-final build.

Why GTA 6's wildlife roster is so large

Michael Kane, Rockstar's vice president of dynamic art, explained that the team wanted to represent Florida's diverse ecosystem throughout Leonida's distinct biomes. That includes the contrast between populated urban and rural spaces, wildlife found in inland and ocean water, and animals tied to marshes and swampy regions.

For useful background on this topic, read Minecraft Dungeons 2 codes: Every Cape Reward and How to Redeem Them.

"Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida - urban and rural environs, aquatic life both inland and ocean, and the wetland habitats like the swamps and Everglades," Kane said.

Kane also emphasized that the animal art and population teams have researched the creatures extensively, with an aim of making them visually accurate while supporting that look with believable movement and animation. That ambition matters because a large species count alone does not necessarily make a game world feel alive. Wildlife needs to appear in sensible locations, behave in ways that suit its environment, and help each area develop its own identity.

In Leonida, a pelican on the coast, an iguana in a warmer developed area, and a deer farther from the city should contribute to a sense that players are crossing between genuinely different ecosystems. The confirmed inclusion of at least one zoo also adds another potential setting for the animal roster, though the full role of that location has not been detailed.

Confirmed land animals in GTA 6

The terrestrial lineup already combines familiar pets, small mammals, imposing predators, reptiles, and animals associated with Florida's natural environment. Some listings remain broad--such as snakes and cats--while others are specific enough to identify individual breeds or species.

  • Beavers
  • Boars
  • Bobcats
  • Cane toads
  • Domestic and feral cats
  • Cougars
  • Deer
  • Dogs, including Chihuahua, Doberman, German Shepherd, and Rottweiler breeds
  • Iguanas
  • Monkeys, including rhesus macaques and likely additional varieties
  • Nine-banded armadillos
  • Otters
  • Raccoons
  • Snakes
  • Squirrels

Several of these animals make immediate sense for a Florida-inspired map. Nine-banded armadillos, cane toads, raccoons, squirrels, and deer can help populate less urbanized sections of the state, while iguanas and rhesus macaques reflect the more unusual animal encounters associated with Florida. The monkey listing is particularly notable, since it implies that wildlife in GTA 6 may go beyond a standard collection of generic woodland animals.

Dogs and cats will likely be among the animals players see most often, especially in neighborhoods and busy city spaces. The named dog breeds suggest Rockstar is pursuing visible variety even among common companion animals. The distinction between domestic and feral cats similarly points toward animal populations that are tailored to their surroundings rather than deployed as one uniform category.

Predatory or potentially dangerous creatures are also represented. Cougars, bobcats, boars, snakes, and cane toads could make the rural side of Leonida feel more hazardous or at least less predictable than its city centers. Rockstar has not explained how interactions with each species will work, whether they can be hunted, observed, photographed, or tied to particular side activities. Their confirmed presence should not be read as confirmation of any specific gameplay system.

Alligators, sharks, whales, and other aquatic life

Water is poised to be one of Leonida's defining features, and the confirmed aquatic list supports that idea. Florida's shoreline, rivers, wetlands, and open sea provide Rockstar with room to create a wildlife population that changes significantly depending on where players travel.

  • Alligators
  • Dolphins
  • Eels
  • Fish
  • Jellyfish
  • Manatees
  • Sea turtles
  • Sharks
  • Whales

Alligators are perhaps the most essential animal for an Everglades-inspired setting. They have appeared prominently enough in Grand Theft Auto 6 material to become one of the clearest indicators of the game's regional inspiration. Their presence also reinforces the importance of wetlands, where canals, marshes, muddy shorelines, and shallow water can offer a very different atmosphere from the dense streets of Vice City.

At the other end of the scale are whales, which suggest that GTA 6's ocean is intended to feel expansive enough to support large marine life. Dolphins, sea turtles, manatees, jellyfish, eels, sharks, and unidentified fish further fill out the aquatic ecosystem. Manatees are especially fitting for the setting and help distinguish Leonida's coastal wildlife from a more generic open-world ocean.

It remains unclear exactly how frequently players will encounter these creatures or how far from shore they will need to venture. Still, the breadth of the list strongly indicates that water travel and shoreline exploration will have environmental detail beyond boats, beaches, and city skylines. Even if some species are relatively rare, their inclusion can make a trip through a river channel or along the coast feel more distinctive.

The birds confirmed for Leonida

Birds account for the largest confirmed portion of GTA 6's animal plan, with Rockstar stating that the final game includes 60 bird species. The identified examples span waterfowl, seabirds, birds of prey, wetland birds, and species players may encounter in heavily populated places.

  • Ducks
  • Eagles
  • Flamingos
  • Cranes
  • Pigeons
  • Pelicans
  • Seagulls
  • Spoonbills
  • Storks
  • Woodpeckers

Flamingos, spoonbills, cranes, storks, and pelicans are particularly well suited to the visual character of wetlands and coastlines. Pigeons can bring motion and detail to city streets, while seagulls naturally belong around beaches, marinas, waterfront businesses, and fishing areas. Eagles and woodpeckers broaden the selection further, suggesting players will find wildlife across wooded, open, and developed landscapes rather than only in the swamp.

Birds may also be key to making Leonida feel active from moment to moment. A large open-world map can seem static if every creature stays at ground level or appears only in remote areas. Flocks overhead, birds gathered on waterfront structures, and species moving through marshes can provide constant environmental activity without needing to turn every encounter into a major event.

More than 100 species are still unknown

The currently identified list is substantial, but it represents less than a third of the 170 species Rockstar has confirmed. That leaves a major gap between what has been shown and what will ultimately be present in GTA 6. Some animals may be deliberately hidden to preserve surprises, while others may simply not have appeared clearly enough in available footage and screenshots to identify responsibly.

That uncertainty is important. Online discussion has raised the possibility of additional wildlife based on previous Rockstar titles, supposed leaked material, and ambiguous shapes in images. None of that is enough to add an animal to the confirmed lineup. Possums, for example, have not been confirmed, and a possible rat silhouette is not definitive either.

For now, the 170-species figure gives players a useful sense of Rockstar's ambition. GTA 6's wildlife is shaping up as a full environmental system spread across Leonida's streets, forests, swamps, rivers, beaches, and open water. Whether players are speeding past a city pigeon, spotting a manatee offshore, watching flamingos in a wetland, or encountering an alligator near the waterline, the animal population looks set to be a major part of what gives the world its regional identity.
