Grand Theft Auto 6 may be positioned as one of gaming's biggest releases, but its November launch timing means it cannot complete the traditional "Big Five" Game of the Year sweep during the 2026/27 awards cycle. The key obstacle is the 44th Golden Joystick Awards, scheduled for November 11, while Rockstar's next open-world crime epic is due to arrive on November 19.
That eight-day gap matters far more than it might initially seem. The Golden Joysticks are generally treated as the first major stop in the industry's annual Game of the Year conversation. A victory there, followed by top honors at The Game Awards, the DICE Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and the BAFTA Games Awards, constitutes the five-show run that fans often call a full sweep.
Only two games have achieved that particular feat across one awards season: Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. With GTA 6 unavailable for the Golden Joysticks this year, Rockstar's game cannot match that record in the strictest sense, no matter how dominant it may prove to be at later ceremonies.
Why the Golden Joystick cutoff changes the conversation
The Golden Joystick Awards have confirmed a November 11 date for their 44th ceremony. Public voting for most categories begins September 25 and concludes October 23. Voting for Ultimate Game of the Year then takes place from October 26 through October 30.

Those dates all arrive well before November 19, when players are expected to finally get access to GTA 6. As a result, the game cannot enter contention for this year's Golden Joystick categories. It will instead have to wait until the 2027 Golden Joystick Awards for its first opportunity at the event's Ultimate Game of the Year prize.
That makes the calendar unusually important. Awards eligibility rules often create confusion around late-year releases, especially when shows use different cutoffs and nomination windows. A game launched close to the end of a year can still contend at several major ceremonies in the months that follow. GTA 6 could remain a leading contender at awards events held after its release, but it cannot retroactively join a Golden Joystick race that has already been decided.
In other words, GTA 6 is not necessarily excluded from the broader 2026/27 Game of the Year discussion. It is excluded from one essential early piece of the exact five-award sequence used to define a clean, single-season sweep.
What counts as the "Big Five"?
The informal Big Five designation is built around five prominent Game of the Year prizes awarded between November and the following spring. The sequence usually starts with the Golden Joysticks, then continues through December's The Game Awards, the DICE Awards in February, the Game Developers Choice Awards in March, and the BAFTA Games Awards in April.
- Golden Joystick Awards: usually the opening major public-voted recognition in the cycle.
- The Game Awards: the high-profile December event watched closely by audiences and the wider industry.
- DICE Awards: honors presented by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
- Game Developers Choice Awards: peer recognition associated with the Game Developers Conference.
- BAFTA Games Awards: the spring ceremony that effectively closes this stretch of awards season.
Winning all five is difficult not only because every body has its own voting process and perspective, but also because the eligible field can shift due to release timing. A late launch must generate enough momentum immediately, compete with games that have been available longer, and meet each organization's eligibility requirements. GTA 6 faces an additional complication: it will arrive after one of the five events has already completed both its voting and ceremony.
Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur set the standard
Baldur's Gate 3 established the benchmark by taking the major Game of the Year honors across a single awards season. Larian Studios' role-playing game earned broad acclaim from players, critics, and industry voters, turning its awards run into an unusually comprehensive consensus.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 subsequently matched that result, placing Sandfall Interactive alongside Larian in this very narrow category. The importance of that achievement comes from the consistency required: it is not enough to be seen as a favorite at one event, or even to win several awards in adjacent calendar years. The game has to carry its momentum across all five named ceremonies in the same recognized season.
By the time the BAFTA Games Awards arrive next spring, those two studios will therefore remain the only ones to have completed the uninterrupted Big Five run. GTA 6 may eventually produce an awards record of its own, but its release date prevents it from joining that specific list under the conventional definition.
A delayed sweep remains possible, depending on the definition
There is still room for debate over the language fans use once GTA 6 reaches awards consideration. If it wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards after its November release, then goes on to claim DICE, Game Developers Choice, and BAFTA honors, it would have captured four of the five prizes associated with the 2026/27 cycle.
Should it then win Ultimate Game of the Year at the 2027 Golden Joystick Awards, supporters could reasonably describe that as a delayed five-award run. It would mean GTA 6 had eventually won each of the same major prizes, simply with the Golden Joystick portion landing at the end rather than the beginning.
However, that interpretation would differ from the standard set by Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Their achievements were defined by collecting all five honors in one continuous season, starting at the Golden Joysticks and closing at BAFTA. GTA 6 cannot follow that order because its first possible Golden Joystick campaign will not occur until nearly a year after its launch.
For awards purists, the timing is decisive. A sweep means winning the five major Game of the Year awards that belong to one awards-season window. Under that reading, GTA 6 can win every other major prize available to it and still fall short of the single-season Big Five distinction.
For others, the larger question will be whether Rockstar's game can win all five awards at all, regardless of sequence. If it does, the debate will likely focus less on whether GTA 6 is an awards powerhouse and more on how precisely its achievement should be labeled.
GTA 6 can still dominate the next awards landscape
Missing the 2026 Golden Joysticks should not be mistaken for a prediction about GTA 6's likely reception. Its November 19 release leaves it eligible for later recognition, subject to the rules of each awards body. The game could be a central presence at December's The Game Awards and remain in contention throughout the early months of 2027.
Its eventual appearance at the 2027 Golden Joystick Awards could also give it another major opportunity to claim a top prize, though that would place it alongside games released in a different eligibility period. The staggered calendar is simply the cost of launching after the first major ceremony's voting has finished.
Rockstar is meanwhile continuing preparations ahead of release. The company has issued modding guidelines that restrict new missions, maps, ports, and other changes, emphasizing that creators should respect its games. Those rules are separate from the awards discussion, but they underline how closely the industry is watching every aspect of the GTA 6 rollout.
The immediate conclusion is clear: GTA 6 cannot complete the same one-season Big Five clean sweep achieved by Larian Studios and Sandfall Interactive. Yet the game's awards story has not been written off; it has merely been shifted by the calendar. Whether players and awards watchers ultimately view a later five-prize collection as equivalent to a sweep will depend on how much weight they place on the traditional season-by-season definition.
