That makes the A9 Max a more nuanced proposition than a typical gaming PC. It is a powerful-looking productivity machine with an integrated GPU attached, rather than a gaming-first computer that happens to be compact. Players who dislike synthetic frames, prefer native rendering, or prioritize consistent image quality will need to lower settings substantially, especially in recent blockbusters. Lighter games are much less problematic. The A9 Max is stronger as a flexible professional machine than as a pure games box. Its Ryzen AI processor, generous memory, large storage allocation, and NPU are all aimed at workloads beyond launching a Steam library. It can support more complex rendering, media creation, and AI-accelerated tasks than less ambitious mini PCs.

In Geekbench 7 testing, the A9 Max outperformed the Ryzen AI Max+ 392 in single-core work, where the comparison score was 2,445, but fell behind that chip in multi-core performance, where the other processor reached 20,906. Apple's M5 Pro-equipped Mac mini was further ahead in the cited productivity figures, exceeding 3,600 in single-core and 30,000 in multi-core testing.

Those comparisons are not a complete verdict because the machines target different strengths. The A9 Max is specifically designed around AI capabilities rather than purely chasing the highest conventional CPU benchmark totals. Still, buyers focused on heavy multi-core production work should recognize that the mini PC does not lead every category simply because it carries AMD's AI branding.

Ports, upgrades and cooling make a strong practical case

One of the A9 Max's clearest wins is its physical design. The unit uses a familiar compact square silhouette with rounded corners and a silver finish, but it remains unobtrusive on a desk. A bundled VESA mounting plate also gives owners the option to hide it behind a monitor. The side panels are textured for airflow, while the overall presentation is clean enough for either an office or a living-room setup.

Adding a dual-channel setup can improve performance, and it is particularly relevant because the older HX 370-based version already benefits from dual-channel memory.

Cooling is another encouraging point. The IceBlast 3.0 system uses a copper heatsink, two copper heat pipes, and larger fan blades designed to move air efficiently. During testing, the A9 Max remained controlled and produced little distracting fan noise. For a small PC expected to sit close to its owner, that is a meaningful quality-of-life advantage.

Should you buy the Geekom A9 Max?

The Geekom A9 Max is easy to recommend to a specific buyer: someone who needs a compact, well-connected, quiet PC for demanding productivity work and AI-focused tasks, but also wants access to modern PC games at 1080p using FSR. Its 32GB of memory, 2TB SSD, versatile ports, four-display potential, VESA mount, and substantial upgrade ceiling create a stronger all-round package than gaming benchmark numbers alone suggest.

It is harder to recommend as a gaming-only purchase. At $1,599, buyers can often find gaming laptops with RTX 5060 graphics, and sometimes RTX 5070 hardware during promotions. Those systems should offer stronger native 1080p performance in games. They may not match the A9 Max's desk-friendly footprint, front-facing port selection, upgrade access, or workstation-centric AI credentials, but they better serve anyone whose primary goal is frame rate.

The older Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 mini PC is also difficult to ignore. Its lower price and dual-channel memory arrangement can give it an advantage in games before upgrades enter the equation. The newer A9 Max's value is therefore tied to its future potential: install dual-channel memory, take advantage of the improved CPU and AI capabilities, and it becomes a more compelling longer-term machine. Without that plan, the premium is less obvious.

Verdict: The A9 Max is a polished and capable mini PC with genuinely usable upscaled gaming, but it is best understood as an AI-ready productivity system that can game, not a compact substitute for a dedicated gaming desktop. FSR can make Cyberpunk 2077 look impressively attainable at around 60fps, yet the asking price demands that buyers also value everything the machine does when they are not playing.
