Fans of the action RPG Freedom Wars are in for a treat as Bandai Namco has announced the release of Freedom Wars Remastered, set to launch on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms on January 10, 2025. The original game, which was a PlayStation Vita exclusive, is being remastered in high definition to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This new version promises to bring back every beloved feature of the original game, accompanying them with several updates and improvements that aim to enhance the player’s experience.
The premise of Freedom Wars is both unique and enthralling. Set in a dystopian future where being born is considered a sin, players must fight to reduce their million-year prison sentence. To do this, they create and customize characters and their accessory partners to take down gigantic biomechanical creatures known as Abductors. The game combines high-flying, three-dimensional combat with a comprehensive weapon crafting and upgrade system that encourages players to strategically approach each battle.
One of the most significant changes in the remastered version is the adjusted game balance and the addition of new difficulty options, which are designed to cater to both new players and veterans of the original game. The updates extend to the weapon crafting and upgrades system, ensuring a smoother and more rewarding crafting experience.
The remastering effort is being supported by Dimps, which includes team members who worked on the original Freedom Wars. This collaboration ensures that the essence of the game remains intact, while also incorporating modern gaming enhancements to avoid frustrations that were not prevalent when the game first launched.
IGN had the opportunity to go hands-on with the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Their initial impressions highlight that the Switch version runs at a lower resolution and is capped at 30 frames per second. Despite these limitations, they noted that the game remains playable. However, it is somewhat disappointing to witness a former Vita game struggle on the Switch platform. Nevertheless, everything that made the original game a standout on the Vita either remains intact or has been refined to mitigate prior frustrations.
When Freedom Wars was initially released in 2014, it received moderate praise for its innovative gameplay and premise, securing a score of seven out of ten from Push Square. As the remastered version approaches its release, both longtime fans and newcomers will likely be keen to see how the updated features transform the gameplay experience.
The remastered version of Freedom Wars is set against the backdrop of increasing expectations from modern games. It aims to preserve the core of what fans loved about the original while modernizing aspects that will improve playability and visual enjoyment. With its slated release, Freedom Wars Remastered may rekindle interest in this unique RPG and introduce its challenging, dystopian world to a new generation of gamers. As the release date draws closer, further details about additional enhancements and features are anticipated, setting the stage for a successful re-introduction of a celebrated game.
