Fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of beloved Game Boy Advance games on Nintendo Switch Online, with a wishlist including Kirby and Metroid titles.

Dreaming of Classic Game Boy Advance Titles on Switch Online

The Game Boy Advance (GBA), a hallmark of handheld gaming, boasts an extensive library of titles that many players fondly remember. With the launch of the GBA on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) in February 2023, Nintendo stirred excitement among fans eager to revisit their old favorites. While the service's current lineup, featuring The Minish Cap and Fire Emblem, is impressive, there's a multitude of games that enthusiasts are clamoring to play on their hybrid consoles.

List revitalization comes in light of Golden Sun and The Lost Age making their NSO debut, provoking an updated wish list for future additions. The article deliberately excludes titles already available on the Switch, except for one notable entrant detailed further on, and leaves out Pokémon games due to the complexities involved with Save States.

One major omission from the lineup is Metroid: Zero Mission, a stellar 2004 remake that offers a refreshed take on Samus' original adventure. Upgraded with modernized graphics and Super Metroid-inspired gameplay, it enhanced the classic with new items, areas, and mini-bosses, making it feel like the definitive way to experience Samus' journey.

Fans of extreme sports would savor the addition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which Vicarious Visions transformed into a remarkable isometric handheld experience. It's remembered not only for its gameplay but also for its soundtrack, visuals, and, remarkably, the inclusion of Spider-Man as a playable character.

Another gem is Astro Boy: The Omega Factor, developed by Treasure, a title that holds a special place thanks to its blend of platforming, beat 'em up, and shoot 'em up elements. It pays homage to Osamu Tezuka's classic character, Astro Boy, by mixing traditional manga-style storytelling with action-packed gameplay.

Equally enjoyable would be Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, a remake of his first console venture. This title is a kaleidoscope of delight, with its colorful visuals and light challenges. Although Kirby & the Amazing Mirror is playable on NSO, many would prefer Nightmare in Dream Land for its nostalgic charm.

Gunstar Super Heroes, the sequel to the classic Gunstar Heroes, appeals to run-and-gun enthusiasts with its modified gameplay tailored for a handheld experience. Keeping the essence of the original, it offers a short but satisfying action dose.

Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire deserves a mention, marrying pinball mechanics with the Pokémon-catching frenzy. This fusion provides a casual yet engaging experience, allowing players to both enjoy the pinball game dynamics and the thrill of capturing Pokémon.

Sonic Advance stands out as a title that managed to maintain the feel of classic Sonic while innovating with new elements. With vibrant visuals and a mix of multiplayer facets, this game holds its ground as a top-tier platformer.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance makes the list with its intriguing tactical gameplay and depth of content, delivering a complex and captivating experience. Players invest hours mastering the intricacies of this tactical RPG, giving it a longevity worth revisiting on the Switch.

Jet Grind Radio, also known as Jet Set Radio, displayed remarkable resilience when adapted to the GBA. Although not a perfect transition from its Dreamcast roots, the game remains an engaging experience with its distinctive style and mechanics.

Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, a richly detailed strategy game loaded with secret characters and special endings, would be another welcome addition. It stands out for providing depth and narrative complexity uncommon in many handheld titles.

Finally, WarioWare Twisted! incorporates a motion sensor in its cartridge, setting an innovative benchmark for the Wario series. While the sensor might complicate its port to the Switch, the core gameplay is worth experiencing today.

Nintendo has hit sentimental chords by adding GBA games to NSO, yet the wishlist of titles remains vast. Each game on this dream roster holds the potential to bring players hours of joy and a trip down memory lane; their addition would only serve to enhance the service's appeal.
