Square Enix's new game Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince dominates the Japanese gaming charts, with over 300K copies sold in its debut, while Nintendo Switch games and hardware display strong performance.

Dragon Quest Monsters Roars to Top in Japan Sales

There's a new leader in the Japanese video game market and it comes in the form of Square Enix's latest title, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, which has celebrated a triumphant entrance onto the scene with an impressive number of sales since its launch on Switch. This resurgence of Dragon Quest’s popularity is a testament to the franchise's enduring appeal and Square Enix's ability to consistently excite its fan base.

Since its release on December 1st, 2023, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince has managed to sell a massive 346,583 copies, which is no small feat in a highly competitive market. The game introduces players to a fresh adventure set in the beloved Dragon Quest universe, where they can collect and train monsters, a familiar yet ever-enjoying formula that has clearly resonated with fans.

While Dragon Quest Monsters took the top spot, it wasn't the only Nintendo Switch title to enjoy success. Taking second place, and a fair distance behind, was Momotaro Dentetsu World, which sold an additional 64,946 copies, reaching a cumulative total of 477,956. This board game style title, combining strategic play with a uniquely Japanese sensibility, continues to charm players several weeks after its release.

Following closely behind Momotaro Dentetsu World, Super Mario Bros. Wonder secured the third place in the Japanese charts, selling 61,794 copies. Players' enduring love for the iconic plumber reinforces Nintendo's knack for creating hits which last. Notably, Super Mario Bros. Wonder crossed a significant milestone, with total sales racking up to an impressive 1,150,511.

The Switch dominance doesn't end there. The rest of the top ten is populated by a mix of new and old Switch titles, showcasing the depth and diversity of the console's library. Super Mario RPG, Pikmin 4, WarioWare: Move It!, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Minecraft, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate rounded out the remainder of the list. It's a reflection of the Nintendo's ability to not only produce a steady stream of new content but also to ensure the longevity of its games.

Nintendo Switch’s first-party lineup holds a remarkable seven out of ten positions in the charts, further solidifying the company's strong standing in the Japanese gaming scene. These franchises, new and old, have established themselves as staples of gaming culture, with titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continuing to sell well years after their initial release.

Even in hardware sales, the Nintendo Switch is the clear favorite among Japanese consumers. The Switch OLED Model led the pack, and when combined with sales of the Switch Lite and the original Switch model, the combined total reaches a striking 79,064 units. In comparison, the PlayStation 5 in its standard and digital versions sold a commendable 42,946 units, but still fell short of challenging the Switch for supremacy.

The PlayStation 5’s sales were split between the standard model, which sold 35,552 units, and the Digital Edition with 7,394 units. Microsoft's presence with the Xbox Series X and Series S was more modest, and the stalwart PlayStation 4 and the New 2DS LL (including the 2DS) maintained some presence, albeit at the tail end of the hardware sales list.

This snapshot of the Japanese gaming market paints a vivid picture: Square Enix's newest title has captured the hearts—and wallets—of gamers, while consistent demand for the Nintendo Switch and its vast array of titles continues unabated. With sales like these, it’s clear that the appetite for gaming within Japan remains strong, driven by a mixture of nostalgia, innovation, and the sheer joy of gaming. As the industry moves forward, both the new entrants and the enduring classics are shaping an exciting landscape for gamers everywhere.
