Classic video games DOOM and DOOM II just received surprising enhanced editions on the Nintendo Switch eShop, featuring a slew of upgrades including cross-platform play.

DOOM and DOOM II Enhanced Editions Surprise Release on Switch

In a move that caught gamers by surprise, id Software, in collaboration with Nightdive Studios and MachineGames, released enhanced versions of the classic video games DOOM and DOOM II on the Nintendo Switch eShop. This release took place amidst the excitement of Quakecon, an event from which fans have come to expect significant announcements. Yet, the immediate availability of these enhancements without prior notice made this reveal particularly thrilling.

The enhanced editions, known as DOOM + DOOM II, bring a wealth of new content and features that aim to both honor the legacy and bolster the enjoyment of these iconic games. The highlight among the new additions is the episode titled "Legacy of Rust," crafted by the trio of id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames. This new chapter adds significant value and freshness to a game celebrated by enthusiasts for decades.

Moreover, these refreshed editions extend their appeal with online cross-platform capabilities, enabling players to engage in deathmatches or cooperate no matter their device. Included are also a new variety of soundtrack recordings to enhance the auditory experience. Players can choose between the classic midi sounds of the original games or opt for the modern interpretations provided by Andrew Hulshult, which also feature new recordings for DOOM II.

The games now run on the KEX engine, which not only improves visual fidelity but ensures smoother gameplay mechanics. This update also brings in BOOM source compatibility which opens doors to numerous mods that have been created by the community over the past 25 years. Additionally, inclusivity and accessibility considerations are evident with options such as high contrast modes, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text for multiplayer chats, among others. The games have been translated into eight new languages, which makes them more accessible globally.

Financially speaking, DOOM + DOOM II offer excellent value—an array of new and enhanced features priced at USD $9.99 / GBP £9.99. Interestingly, those who already own the original versions of DOOM or DOOM II on Switch are eligible for these upgrades at no extra cost, ensuring that loyal fans are appreciated without additional charges.

Included in this package are multiple critically acclaimed expansions like TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment, alongside newer additions such as Sigil and No Rest for the Living. Players will find themselves spoilt for choice with a total of 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps.

Apart from the major upgrades, there are numerous enhancements that improve general gameplay. These include upgraded visuals, modern controller support, a faster weapon carousel, and gyroscopic aiming. Enhanced controls for mouse and keyboard are also part of the update, along with support for local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players.

DOOM + DOOM II now also support 60 FPS and native 16:9 display, providing up to 1080p resolution. Players can also enjoy the nostalgia of the original in-game music, now restored using original hardware to deliver an authentic audio experience. Moreover, quick save/load support further enhances the user experience, alongside DeHacked mod support and a feature-rich mod browser.

Though the release was somewhat stealthy, appearing first through a listing spotted on Steam by Wario64 before making it to the Nintendo eShop, it has been met with enthusiasm and excitement from the gaming community. These enhancements not only breathe new life into the beloved DOOM series but also invite both veterans and newcomers to explore the depths of these timeless classics. Whether revisiting or discovering, the enhanced DOOM and DOOM II promise intense action and engaging gameplay, now more accessible and enjoyable than ever.
