The beloved and peculiar adventure game Cookie’s Bustle faces digital extinction due mainly to copyright issues, stirring a dedicated fan community into action to save it.

Digital Crusade to Preserve a Cult Classic Game

The internet is a vast archive of digital artifacts, among which video games hold a special place in the hearts of their respective communities. One such game, developed by a Japanese company Rodik and little known outside of Japan, is Cookie’s Bustle. This quaint 1999 adventure game for Windows and Mac captures the imagination with its eccentric storyline and charming gameplay. However, in recent times, it has become more famous for its near disappearance from the digital world than for its in-game content - a true testament to the "Streisand effect".

Cookie’s Bustle offers players the opportunity to step into the shoes of Cookie Blair, a five-year-old New Jersey girl with a peculiar belief that she is a bear. Her adventures take her to Bombo World, a fictional island with a hundred-year history involving a community of aliens that have made it their home. Intent on competing at the regional Olympics, Cookie must first navigate through Bombo City's turmoil and, in a twist deserving of a fairytale, develop "a pure heart" to reach her grandmother.

Although the game’s eccentric plot and design may initially seem odd, they perhaps reflect an attempt by its creators to appeal to European gamers. Despite this, Cookie’s Bustle remained exclusive to Japan. Its developer, Rodik, has since vanished into obscurity, with Cookie’s Bustle being their final, and perhaps most unusual, legacy.

The unusual charm of Cookie’s Bustle remained largely unnoticed until 2018 when a cache of rare Japanese PC games was leaked online, leading to the discovery of this hidden gem by the international gaming community. Its quirky design and dialog caught the attention of YouTubers, and in particular, a channel called Classics of Game shed new light on this forgotten title in 2020 and 2021. However, it was a longplay by YouTuber Sebmal that truly showcased the game’s full potential, although their passion project was short-lived due to unexpected copyright takedowns.

A company named Graceware, invoking UK association board Ukie’s authority, started issuing takedown notices, causing an upheaval within the Cookie’s Bustle community. Despite a lack of evidence that Graceware had any rightful claim or intention to monetize the game’s content, their aggressive takedowns were successful, and mysterious. Other Rodik creations seemed immune to their grasp, and counterclaims by content creators failed, leading to the near erasure of Cookie’s Bustle from the web.

The situation escalated further when Twitch streamer Vinesauce showcased the game to thousands of viewers, summarily followed by more takedowns and a copyright strike on their channel, which evoked considerable frustration and confusion. The reasoning behind the takedowns remained a mystery—no explanations were provided to the disappointed fan community who saw Cookie’s Bustle as an art piece worthy of preservation.

Two videos on YouTube, exceptionally surviving the vigilant eye of the copyright trolls, provide insight into the history and current plight of Cookie’s Bustle. These remaining accounts have served to galvanize a tight-knit community determined to preserve and continue sharing this quirky title that captured their imaginations.

One glimmer of hope is a translation project within this community, now nearing completion, perhaps allowing the game to be enjoyed by a wider, English-speaking audience. This demonstrates not only a fierce loyalty to Cookie Blair's charm but also an act of digital defiance against those attempting to silence her story.

The saga of Cookie's Bustle has unwittingly highlighted critical issues within the current copyright system, where questionable claims can lead to indiscriminate enforcement, often without thorough verification. Despite these challenges, the community's passion renders Cookie’s Bustle far from forgotten, and they remain steadfast in their mission to protect this digital treasure from obscurity.

Questions persist about the motives behind the aggressive takedowns, and why Cookie’s Bustle, of all abandoned games, faced such fervent attempts at erasure. Although definitive answers might never be uncovered, the game continues to live on through the collective efforts of those dedicated to its survival, ensuring that the curious tale of Cookie Blair and her whimsical world perseveres in the digital age.
