Deadpool 3, Marvel's highly anticipated threequel, might not meet its projected release date, according to director Shawn Levy. Despite recent reports that the film was on track for a May 3, 2024 release, the ongoing actors' strike and paused production could potentially delay this.
The strike by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is still underway despite the conclusion of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. Unfortunately, this means production for the third instalment of Deadpool remains stuck in limbo.
Shawn Levy expressed his uncertainty during an interview with TheWrap, saying, "I wish I knew. I don't even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3.” He further explained how the actors' strike and the lingering halt in production have endangered the slated release date. "Certainly, the actors' strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We've shot half the movie. I've edited half the movie. We're dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year."
Ryan Reynolds is set to reprise his lead role as the superhero Deadpool, along with Hugh Jackman, who will be returning as Wolverine. Jennifer Garner also joins the dynamic duo, reprising her role as Elektra. The first official photo from the movie gave fans a glimpse of Jackman's Wolverine dressed in a comic-inspired outfit — a design that had been eagerly anticipated for over two decades. Levy seemed equally enthusiastic, commenting on his vision for the Wolverine costume, stating that he wanted to do justice to the iconic blue and yellow design.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the next on the list after Deadpool 3 is the sequel to Captain Marvel, titled The Marvels, as well as the continuation of Loki's second season on Disney Plus, a streaming platform. MCU enthusiasts have a lot in their watchlist, including in-depth analysis on Loki's season 2, its release schedule, a recap of season 1, and insights into the character's history. As the film industry grapples with ongoing grievances, fans and movie-goers around the world continue to wait for updates on their favourite franchises. Amid these uncertainties, one thing is for sure — the return of Reynolds as Deadpool, Jackman as Wolverine, and Garland as Elektra has created a buzz in the industry and among viewers. As fans impatiently anticipate the movie's release, uncertainties about the release date only add to their eagerness for the film. The pressure is on for Levy and his team to bring this much-awaited superhero drama to its fervent fan base.
Even with the current challenges and potential delays, one can only hope that the trio of Reynolds, Jackman and Garner will bring some much-needed comic-book adventure and action to the big screen soon. The wait might be long, but if past superhero films have taught us anything, it's that they often prove worth the wait. Only time will tell if Deadpool 3 will follow that trend.
