John Garvin, the director of Days Gone, has expressed his displeasure on social media regarding the use of his game's main character, Deacon St John, in the Astro Bot platformer for PS5.

Days Gone Director Criticizes Astro Bot's Character Cameo

Recently, John Garvin, the director of the popular PlayStation 4 game Days Gone, voiced his dissatisfaction on the social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), concerning the use of his game's protagonist, Deacon St John, in the newly released PlayStation 5 platformer, Astro Bot. Garvin expressed that the character he created was "reduced to a cartoon shill" for what he referred to as a "small game," undermining the legacy of the character and, by extension, Days Gone itself.

Astro Bot, a game celebrated for its innovation and homage to the PlayStation universe, features various characters from different franchises, engaging players with its playful and respectful nods to PlayStation's history. However, Garvin's critique centers on what he perceives as a misuse of Deacon St John, affectionately known as 'Deek' to fans of Days Gone. On X, Garvin lamented, "Kinda sad that Deek has been reduced to promoting other games... well done, Bend Studio! Way to protect your legacy!" This comment sparked a mix of support and backlash from the gaming community.

The backlash was predominantly from fans who appreciate Astro Bot for its creativity and its celebratory approach towards PlayStation's iconic characters. This isn't the first time Garvin has used social media to air grievances or to critique fans and colleagues alike. His comments about Astro Bot were similarly blunt, even telling one user to “sit down […] adults are talking” when his views were challenged.

Garvin’s disenchantment with the handling of the Days Gone intellectual property traced back to his departure from Bend Studio. He left the company in 2020 alongside Jeff Ross, another director at the studio, after their sequel pitch for Days Gone was rejected by Sony. Since then, both directors have been vocal about their frustrations with Sony's decision-making processes and the direction of PlayStation's content management.

Despite the controversies, some have sided with Garvin, suggesting that the character of Deacon St John should not be used in contexts that do not honor the original tone and setting of Days Gone. Days Gone, an open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic Oregon, showcases a gritty and realistic portrayal of its characters, in stark contrast to the light-hearted and cartoonish universe of Astro Bot.

Meanwhile, actor Sam Witwer, who portrayed Deacon St John in Days Gone, seemed to have a more positive outlook on the cameo. He mentioned on social media that he was excited to see the character in Astro Bot and was looking forward to purchasing the game.

This incident opens up broader discussions about the ownership and use of video game characters across different franchises and platforms. It underscores the emotional investment developers and creators have in the characters and worlds they build, and the complexities involved when these entities are shared or altered in collaborative industry projects.

While Garvin’s sentiments are stark and straightforward, they reflect a personal connection to his work and a protective stance over the narrative integrity of his creation. This controversy, while focused on a specific character and game, also invites reflection on the respect and homage given to original material when adapted or included in new gaming contexts. The scenario also highlights the passionate engagement of fans and creators alike in the ongoing evolution of gaming universes, and the dialogues that can arise when visions and interpretations of beloved characters diverge in shared spaces within the industry.
