David Tennant, the charismatic actor known for his portrayal of Doctor Who's Tenth Doctor, is no stranger to returning to the character. Since first stepping into the Doctor's shoes from 2005 to 2010, Tennant has reprised the role during the joyous celebration of The Day of The Doctor, a 50th-anniversary episode. And now, a decade later, he's ready to reprise the role in the forthcoming 60th anniversary specials, which are set to welcome back Catherine Tate's companion character Donna Noble and Russell T Davies, the showrunner.
However, Tennant's most recent return sees him in a new role. This time he's not portraying the Tenth Doctor but the Fourteenth Doctor, a uniquely different character. This has created some degree of puzzlement among fans as the Fourteenth Doctor's role was rumored to go to actor Ncuti Gatwa, who is now embodying the Fifteenth Doctor.
In a recent interview with SFX magazine, Tennant addressed the intriguing question: will he return to Doctor Who in the future? He candidly admitted that although no plans are in place, he is certainly not discounting the idea. "I think it would be disingenuous to imagine that I might never be asked again because history would indicate that it's always a possibility. So, I’m not going to say never because I don’t think anyone would believe me. That doesn’t mean I know that I ever will. But I suppose until I can’t run down a corridor, it’s always a possibility," he said.
When it was mentioned that Patrick Stewart, a revered actor, is still actively portraying Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek at a spry 82, Tennant humorously suggested that that should be his goal. "Maybe," he mused, "I should aim for one last outing as The Doctor at 82. I've got 30 years to prepare."
The TARDIS could certainly help to bridge the temporal gap!
Fans have a lot to look forward to in the near future, as the launch of the three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials kicks off on November 25, with subsequent releases available weekly. Furthermore, a new season starring Gatwa as The Doctor will make its debut in 2024.
While we cannot confirm Tennant's return to the beloved British TV series, his remarks do whet the appetite for a potential future reappearance. But until then, there remains a wealth of Doctor Who adventure to enjoy, with new stories, faces, and perhaps even surprises along the way.
